Day Thirteen…

February 1, 2009 By Deanna Piercy 4 Comments

I could have made do with just picking up some milk and perhaps three or four other items today but David gave me my household allowance today. I figured it was silly to make another trip on Monday to buy groceries when I was going to be in town today anyway. So, I went ahead and re-stocked my food supplies. Here is what I bought:

Coffee: $12.01 (a pound of our favorite coffee and one of the few things David is picky about)

Groceries (I’m going to list what I bought and the prices as I think this might be interesting for people to compare with prices in their own area):

bread $2.39

Dairy–
Laughing Cow wedge cheese $2.99
sharp cheddar cheese 8oz. 2 for $5.00
sour cream 24 oz. $2.29

russet potatoes 10 lb. $2.97
red leaf lettuce $1.99

celery $1.59
green bell pepper $0.99
green onions $0.59

Other groceries–
Hellman’s mayo $4.79 (really need to find coupons for this!)
vinegar 3 gallons $10.77 (David needed this for the water heater)
potato chips $2.50
crackers $2.50
organic sugar $2.19
picante sauce $2.00
pickle relish $1.95
canned green beans 2 for $1.50
canned corn 2 for $1.50
Earl Grey tea 2 boxes $5.30

Misc.–
one reusable bag (needed 1 more) $1.00

Total at grocery store: $128.77

Braums Dairy store–
1/2 gallon milk $1.89
16 oz. cottage cheese $1.69
8oz. cream $1.79
pint 1/2 and 1/2 $1.79
colby cheese slices $3.69
about 2.5 lb. red grapes $5.11

Total at Braums: $17.32

I also bought David and I each a diet vanilla coke– $2.50

And lunch (burgers and fries) — $8.61

Total spent today: $169.21
Grand total: $200.36 for basically two weeks to feed three adults

I’m going to keep doing this for another couple of weeks at least in order to give myself a clearer picture of what I’m spending. Don’t worry, I’ll start posting some other things, too, and you can just ignore these posts if they don’t interest you. 😉

I also did my shopping yesterday. Looks like your prices are quite a bit lower than ours for some things. I did find 2 organic whole chickens for 30% off and chuck roast buy one get one free.

If you’re bored and looking for something to do I’d be interested in seeing a list of what you bought with prices. Several of the items I bought were on sale. Because I generally keep extras of things on hand, I can often wait and buy on sale.

I do know that when we go to California we are amazed at how much higher most groceries are.

Where did you get organic sugar and which kind was it?

I got the sugar at Apple Market. It’s “Clearly Organic” (Best Choice).
