March Grocery Haul

March 8, 2013 By Deanna Piercy 3 Comments

Today was our big shopping day. Lisa and I headed out this morning and met up with Audrey (Lisa’s best friend since childhood), Kadi (Chris’ girlfriend) and Addie (Kadi’s sister) for lunch at our favorite restaurant in Norman, Pink Elephant Cafe and Tres Cantina. We all enjoyed our yummy food and a nice visit then Lisa and I did our grocery shopping.

We went to a total of six stores plus dropped off our recycling and still managed to finish up much earlier than usual. We were back in town by 6 p.m. It was rather nice to be home well before dark and in time for dinner. I had taken out some homemade enchiladas from the freezer and put in the fridge this morning. David put them in the oven for me just as we were coming into town so by the time I had dropped off Lisa, driven home, and put away everything, dinner was done. I really must put some more entrees in the freezer for easy dinners on busy nights.

Before I put the groceries away I arranged them on the table for a picture. I then decided to take a short video with the new app, Vine. And then forgot to take actual photos! Oh, well. Here is the video:

And here’s the list of what I bought:

Earth Natural Foods:

  • freshly baked baguette
  • diced green chilis
  • dried bananas

  • locally raised organic chicken breasts
  • 1/4 # English cheddar with caramelized onions
  • 1/3 # maple smoked cheddar
  • spaghetti
Total: $38.46
Total: $233.80

I’ll be picking up my Azure Standard Co-op order next Tuesday and it will contain:
  • 5# organic blood oranges
  • 32 oz. organic apple cider vinegar
  • organic semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • shampoo bar
  • *personal* item
  • organic brown sugar
  • chicken flavored broth granules
  • (24) 8 oz. organic chicken broth
  • organic broccoli
  • 5# organic carrots
  • 5# organic potatoes
  • organic pineapple juice
  • toothpaste
  • (2) 24 oz. strained tomatoes
Total: $96.57
Grand total: $330.37

I think we are now pretty well stocked for the next month. I still had apples, oranges, onions, lots of frozen fruits and veggies, beans, brown rice, pasta, baking items, etc. I’m seriously considering going back to an almost entirely vegetarian diet – well, pescetarian which includes fish and seafood. I’ll still serve some meat to David but he doesn’t really care much one way or the other. We both are just as happy with enchiladas or tacos made with black beans rather than ground beef. And the black bean/quinoa burgers I made not long ago we absolutely delicious, especially on my homemade hamburger buns and all the usual burger fixings. I’m not going to be rigid about it but I’ll aim for at least 95% vegetarian for myself. With all the wonderful produce which will start becoming available in the coming weeks I’m not likely to miss meat.
It’s now 9:30 p.m. and I’m ready to call it a night. I think I’ll curl up in my chair with a glass of wine and the book I just started last night, “Peace Pilgrim”. What a fascinating story about an amazing woman. I’ll try to do a book review when I finish it.
