Summer Television

June 14, 2016 By Deanna Piercy 4 Comments

I virtually never watch daytime TV except on some rare occasions in hotel rooms. Each time I am reminded of why I don’t bother at home – there is nothing worth watching. In a way I find that rather sad as I have fond childhood memories of watching morning television during the summer when school was out.

Summer Television

I was a child of the 60s/70s and television was a different beast. For one thing, we didn’t have 500 channels to choose from. In fact, while our family did get cable fairly early, I do have vague memories of when we only got about four channels via antenna. We lived in the desert of Southern California so we were able to pick up some Los Angeles stations without cable. Even when we did get cable there were only seven stations, if I remember correctly (2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13). Televisions only went up to channel 13 and you changed them by turning a knob on the TV itself. Yes, I’m old.

That may sound tragic to today’s youth but we didn’t know any better and were fine with it. In some ways I think television back then was more enjoyable because it was special. Since this was in the days before VCRs and DVRs, if you missed a show, you missed it.

I spent a lot of my time reading but I still enjoyed certain TV shows, especially the usual daytime lineup of syndicated programs such as Hazel, I Dream of Jeannie and my favorite, Bewitched. These started as prime-time shows and I do remember seeing Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie during prime time but Hazel ended when I was only four. I think I liked the morning lineup best because there was never any competition for the TV. In the evenings when my dad was home we were more likely to watch whatever he was interested in. He usually brought home lots of paperwork each night and he’d set up a card table in the living room where he would price invoices while watching TV. But during summer mornings? The TV was all ours.

What were your favorite childhood television shows?

Unplanned Saturday

August 5, 2013 By Deanna Piercy Leave a Comment

Almost exactly four years ago we bought our first Prius:

It’s been such a wonderful car. I get around 50 mpg, it’s extremely comfortable and it suits our needs perfectly. Several months ago David started talking about trading it in on a new one. Saturday morning we received a phone call from the dealership where we bought it asking if we were interested in trading it in. They had a customer looking for a black, used Prius with leather interior. We decided to go check out our options. And we came home with this:

My new Prius

It’s a new 2013 Prius Persona edition, which means it has 17 inch alloy wheels rather than the regular 15 inch with hubcaps. It also has a little sportier interior. It’s probably not terribly practical in this heat but the interior of this one is black rather than the gray in our other one. It does look really nice, though, and I’m very happy with my new car.
After we finished the trade, we headed to Moore to see a movie.

I’ve been wanting to see a movie for weeks now but there just hasn’t been anything I really was interested in. Finally I found one that sounded good – “The Way, Way Back”. It’s a coming-of-age story with a nice mix of humor and drama. Not enough car chases or shooting for David to put it at the top of his recommended list but I really enjoyed it.
We then had dinner at a new restaurant near the theater – Hollie’s Flatiron Steakhouse. The food was pretty good and the service was excellent. My only complaint was the atmosphere. Don’t get me wrong. The interior was quite lovely but can someone explain why a nice steakhouse needs dozens of televisions all over the place? There were at least half a dozen in my line of sight alone. Even worse, every television was tuned to either NASCAR or Fox News. If I were Queen of the World restaurants would not have televisions. Except sports bars. They’d be allowed there.
It wasn’t exactly how we had planned to spend our Saturday but I’d say it turned out quite well.

What I’m Into (June 2013 Edition)

July 3, 2013 By Deanna Piercy 2 Comments

I’ve seen several people doing these “What I’m Into” posts recently. I’ve really enjoyed reading them so I decided I’d do it, too. Here goes:

Around My Home

Early in June David rented three levels of scaffolding and replaced the siding on the peak on the front of our house. This is a project he’s been working on for a few years now, saving the highest and scariest part for last. I was a nervous wreck all weekend but it’s done and there were no E.R. visits. He’s still got one little section on the side and then the balcony. It’s going to be so nice when it’s finished. He’s going to install a couple of ceiling fans and I figured out a way to have it screened in and still look nice.

Nailing up the final piece

I only managed to get six tomato plants planted this year and nothing else. We had late frosts and then were busy with Happyland Music Fest and recovery time and, well, that’s all I did. I also decided not to get chickens because one of David’s firefighter buddies is keeping us in eggs. He lives alone and is getting about a dozen eggs a day. I’m giving him the big bag of organic feed I bought when I still thought I’d be getting chicks in exchange for eggs. I still miss having chickens and maybe someday I’ll do it again but for now at least I have a source for good, fresh eggs. Good enough.

Reading – Books and Blogs

Books: I’ve had a hard time really getting into a book recently. Part of the problem is that we stay up ridiculously late and by the time we go to bed I’m too tired to read more than a couple of pages. I’m hoping to change that, by the way. But the rest of the issue was that I just wasn’t making good book selections. I checked out Anthony Bourdain’s book, “The Nasty Bits” from the library anticipating a good read. I loved his book, “Kitchen Confidential” and I really enjoy his shows. Somehow, this book just didn’t do it for me. It’s a collection of pieces he’s written for other publications and while some were very entertaining, the lack of continuing narrative failed to capture my attention. It’s the sort of book you read in short bursts so perhaps I should have put it in the bathroom. 😉 I may give it a whirl again someday but it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for.

I did really enjoy Pat Conroy’s “South of Broad” which I listened to in the car. And I’m currently reading “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce, which a couple of my readers here recommended. I’m only about 15 pages into it but I think I’m really going to like it.

Blogs
:

  • Rachel Held Evans – Her posts make me think and most of the time I find myself nodding in agreement.
  • Movie Star Makeover – The author of this blog used to be a moderator on the French Chic group I’ve been part of for years. She was, and is, a true inspiration to those of us in the group. She’s moved on to other things but I enjoy her blog posts. This month she wrote a post about “Parent Trap” which I adored.
  • Suburban Turmoil – Her post, Bad Christian, inspired me to write a post with a similar theme.

Watching – Movies, T.V. and YouTube

  • T.V. – David and I thoroughly enjoyed Mad Men this month and can’t wait for the new season. We may pick another series to watch via Netflix this summer but in the meantime we’ve been enjoying Cheers. Our daughter bought David the first three seasons for Father’s Day. It’s one of those rare shows which has really held up well over the years. We also watch The Daily Show regularly and are pleasantly surprised by how well John Oliver is filling Jon Stewart’s role while he’s away this summer.
  • Movies – I love French films and truly enjoyed “The Grocer’s Son”. Inspired by a blog I read, I ordered “The Parent Trap” via Netflix and David and I both enjoyed watching it. I’ve really been wanting to go to the movies lately and we finally had the opportunity on our anniversary. Chris and Kadi were planning to see “This is the End” and asked if we’d like to go, too. We all went out to eat first (along with a couple of the kids’ friends) and then to the show. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it but it was surprisingly entertaining.

  • And Cheesy Bruschetta Pork Chops – yum!
  • I made homemade banana pudding for a Father’s Day dinner for the family.

We had a couple of especially nice meals in restaurants this month:

  • A lovely sunset meal at the Hefner Grill
  • Melt-in-your-mouth filets at The Mantel

Keeping in touch – Bye bye, Google Reader

Chances are if you’re an avid blog reader you know that as of last night, Google Reader is no more. I’ve known this was coming and as soon as it was announced I imported my feeds to both Bloglovin’ and Feedly. I had planned to start getting used to them before Google disappeared but habit won out. For now I’m using both and trying to decide which I like best. I’m leaning toward Feedly for a couple of reasons. First, the Feedly iPhone app is significantly better than Bloglovin’s and second, I like the fact that Feedly displays the entire blog post rather than requiring that you click on through to the original source. With my sloooowwww internet connection fewer page loads matter.

I find a reader virtually essential for keeping up with a large number of blogs but I do know that some manage their reading in other ways (I’d love to hear your method). The important thing is that I don’t want to lose any of my readers so I hope you’ll choose a way to follow which works for you.

Memory Lane Monday…I Love Lucy

May 17, 2010 By Deanna Piercy Leave a Comment

This past Friday, inspired by some reminiscing by my kids, I posted on Facebook several clips from television programs I watched as a child. I must have had well over 50 responses and comments from friends who enjoyed the little trip down Memory Lane.

I’ve been doing Menu Plan Mondays on my Dee’s Kitchen blog, and Music Mondays on my Well-Groomed Hippie blog. I had been trying to think of something like that for this blog and now I’ve got it. Each Monday I’ll post something that triggers a fond memory for me. If you are around my age, many of them will probably strike a chord for you as well. If you’d like to participate and post your own Memory Lane Mondays, be sure to leave me a comment and I’ll visit your blog. Oh, and please link back to this post. As soon as I have time, I’ll make a Memory Lane Monday badge for blog sidebars for those who would like to participate.

And now for the first memory:

“I Love Lucy” was originally aired well before I was born but I have enjoyed watching re-runs ever since I was a small child. I have seen every episode many times and own the first two seasons on DVD. Lucille Ball was an absolute comedic genius and I never tire of these shows. Enjoy!
