We were busy around the house and didn’t eat dinner until rather late so we observed Earth Hour on California time. David grilled chicken and we ate by candlelight on our patio. Afterwards he got a fire started in the fire pit while I cleaned up the kitchen…again by candlelight. Then we relaxed by the fire sipping wine and enjoying this beautiful Spring night. Not much of a sacrifice, I must admit.

No, not much of a sacrifice… But it sounds very pleasant anyway!
I must admit, I made no sacrifice. Having everything turned off for Earth Hour would have meant an hour when the degus had neither their lamp on, nor the radio or TV to listen to, which would have meant an hour of squealing degus. The light thing we could have fixed with candles, but unless I wanted to sing for an hour (which I'm sure the neighbours wouldn't have liked, and know my throat would have struggled to deal with) there was no way to give them enough noise going on that they'd be happy. And, yes, they would have squealed the whole time – Jasper would, anyway. He managed to do so about a year and a half ago when we spent 13 hours with no power… Longest 13 hours of my life! Sorry, but an hour of Jasper being unhappy is not something I can deal with right now!
I'm all for being environmentally friendly, and try in my every day life to do the right things; recycle, buy locally whenever possible, turn off things not being used (either by us or the degus)… You get the idea. So, I hope that makes up for my refusal to suffer the displeasure of my degu boys.

It truly is the things we do every day which matter most.

We ended up not doing Earth Hour for the first time in forever. I forget about it and we had already planned to be away from the house. Oops! ha

It was almost 8 p.m. when we realized what time it was. I hadn't even cooked dinner yet. That's when we decided to observe Earth Hour on California time. Ha!

I also completely forgot about Earth Hour. We weren't home – which is unusual for us – so couldn't have actually done anything for it. But I wish I had remembered just so I could spread the word!

I usually sign up for it weeks in advance and share info about it ahead of time. This year it got past me until Saturday morning. Next year, though!
