David bought me an absolutely perfect birthday gift last year. He paid for five massages with the most incredible massage therapist. Well, I’ve only been to one other so I suppose I can’t say for sure, but I will tell you that I left feeling like a wet noodle after today’s session.
Indiana (isn’t that a great name?) is this adorable little woman from Brazil who simply exudes peace, love and joy. She always greets me with a hug and gives me another when I leave. In between those hugs she manages to locate every tender spot, sore muscle and area of inflammation then gently works her magic. And I do believe she has something that can’t be taught but is truly a gift.
It’s been several months since my last appointment because Indiana spent nearly three months in Brazil with her father who was dying of cancer. He passed away about a month ago and she’s been catching up with clients since her return. I’m not sure if she was trying to make up for her absence or if it was because my back, neck and rotator cuffs were a mess, but instead of the usual one hour massage, she worked on me for almost two hours. TWO HOURS, people! I suspect I dozed off a bit toward the end because there seem to be some blank spots on my brain tape. And I think I might have heard myself start to snore once or twice. Or maybe five or six times.
My favorite thing about Indiana is the way she ends each massage session. The last part of the massage has her sitting on a stool gently massaging my face and head. Which feels absolutely fantastic, by the way. She then gently holds my head in her warm hands, perfectly still and totally silent for about 30 seconds or so. I think she’s praying for me. I started to ask her today but then decided not to. If she’s not, I don’t want to know. I prefer to think that’s what she’s doing and at the same time, I pray for her.
Now, if I can just figure out how to manage one of these incredible massages every week…
