A recovering packrat

May 5, 2006 By Deanna Piercy 1 Comment

I’m at least a third generation packrat and I’ve had enough! Each time we have moved to a larger home I look at all the empty storage spaces and think, “Wow! I’ll never fill all that.” But within an amazingly short period of time it’s full.

With one kid in college and the other married, my husband and I are what I had dreaded for a long time – empty nesters. Well, only in the sense that the chicks have flown from the nest. They left an astounding amount of *stuff* behind. Our son is in his fourth year of college and living in our guest house. Despite having *moved out* four years ago, I just finally got the last of his things out of his old room and over to the guest house — the three bedroom guest house which is stuffed to the gills, too.

And our daughter got married last summer but since they haven’t bought a house yet, she left most of her childhood things, as well as lots of wedding gifts here. I don’t mind storing her things, especially after I got them all organized and neatly stowed away in closets. Besides, when they get a house I should be able to give them a bunch of my stuff that I couldn’t otherwise bear to part with. It’s easier if I know my things are going to a good home. 🙂

So this blog will chronicle my attempts to sift through a lifetime of accumulated *stuff* and hopefully make some rational decisions about what to keep and what to pass on to someone else. In addition, I have a hunch I will be making some discoveries about myself in the process. After many years of being a *sahm* (stay at home mom) and even homeschooling for almost a decade, I am in a new stage of life. I’m pretty sure there’s an interesting person in here somewhere, if I can just find her.

We had three boys when I was close to forty, so we’re empty nesting only now at sixty when i could easilly be a grandfather.
