Friday and Saturday were absolutely perfect weather-wise. Sunny with temperatures in the 70s – just perfect. I went for a walk in the park on Friday with my lovely daughter. David and I had planned to take a picnic lunch to the lake on Saturday but just before we were ready to leave he got called out on a grass fire. As soon as they put that one out, he got called to help on another. By the time he got home it was too late to go so we didn’t get our outing. And then Sunday was overcast and in the 40s. Not horrible, just rather dreary, and today was cool and mostly sunny. However, we are in for some serious rain/sleet/freezing rain, eventually turning to snow. Even worse, the temperatures are supposed to drop into the single digits. Is it too late to book a trip to the tropics? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Sigh…
So we are prepared for the worst while hoping the meteorologists have made a big mistake (Ha!). Yesterday David drove to a nearby town and bought half a rick of firewood which is now neatly stacked just outside our sliding glass door. It doesn’t look great but David decided this would allow me to keep the fire going without going outside. Unless he can’t make it to work in which case this will be HIS job. He currently has a rip-roaring fire going in order to really warm up the house in case we lose power. I’m upstairs and it’s HOT. I asked him if I could open the sliding glass door up here that opens onto the balcony but he said no.
Yesterday while he was dealing with firewood I was grocery shopping. We are well-stocked with everything we need for the rest of the week. I’ve been reading all the various comments on Facebook today about how crazy the stores are and feeling rather smug for having planned ahead. I prepared for Y2K; being ready for a winter storm is a piece of cake!
Today I have been making sure that all the laundry is done (I’m going to do one more load but the essentials are all done), the house is clean-ish and the chickens are all set up for a couple of days in their coop. Fortunately we have a heated water container for them which is great as long as we have electricity. The biggest concern is that when we get the rain and ice before the snow, losing power is a real possibility. We do have a generator and David bought gasoline for it today. We also have a propane grill and a full tank for it.
We’ve been through all this before. Several years ago we went without electricity with temperatures in the teens for a week. I quickly learned that reading the Little House on the Prairie book, The Long Winter, is much better than living even a very mild version of it. I think we are well set for whatever the storm may bring but honestly?…I am counting the days until Spring.
