Many years ago, while homeschooling my daughter (Retro Housewife Goes Green), I read Swallows and Amazons to her. We were both charmed by the story and I believe it remains one of her favorite books to this day. Sometimes it’s good to revisit old favorites and that is what I’m doing with our September Book Club selection.

Swallows and Amazons
by Arthur Ransome
Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome is a timeless children’s adventure classic set in the beautiful English countryside, following four siblings—John, Susan, Titty, and Roger Walker—who spend their summer sailing a small boat, camping on a remote island, and inventing thrilling games of pirates, treasure hunts, and friendly battles against another group of children known as the Amazons. Blending outdoor adventure, imagination, and heartfelt storytelling, this beloved novel celebrates friendship, independence, courage, and teamwork, making it perfect for middle-grade readers, families, and fans of classic British literature. With vivid descriptions, lovable characters, and an inspiring spirit of exploration, Swallows and Amazons remains an enduring favorite that encourages young readers to love nature, embrace curiosity, and dream boldly.
Note: Many of us are doing our best to avoid purchasing from Amazon and a number of other large corporations, for a variety of reasons. I recommend checking your local library or purchasing books from local book stores if you have them in your area. If not, Bookshop.org is a great option.
If you enjoy this book, you’ll be happy to know there are 12 books in the series:
There are also a couple of films based on Swallows and Amazons.
This one sounds like it is only loosely based on the original story:
The original 1974 film seems to have limited availability outside the UK which is a shame. I’d love to see it!
At the time of this writing it is on YouTube but from what I understand, it keeps getting removed. Perhaps if we hurry!
