Vintage Menu Plans:
A Monthly Feature
A month-by-month collection of vintage menu plans. Each month features seven dinners and seven “luncheons”. Enjoy!
Are you looking for inspiration for your weekly menu? Tired of making the same ol’ thing? Never know what to serve as side dishes? Well, look no further. I’ve got some vintage menu plans to share with you!
I’ve decided to make this a monthly series. At the beginning of each month I’ll share a collection of vintage menu plans from one of my cookbooks. At the end of the year we’ll have an interesting collection of seasonal meal plans. Enjoy!
Here we are in March and that means it’s time for the Vintage Menu Plans post. We have two holidays included this month – St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. I realize Easter is in April this year but I’ve gone ahead and included it this month in case you’d like the advance planning time.
It’s springtime and that calls for some changes in our meals. I’m always happy when asparagus comes into season. And David is delighted when I can find artichokes. Let’s find inspiration in April’s Vintage Menu Plans.
It’s a new month and that means it’s time for another installment of our ongoing series – Vintage Menu Plans. I’ve got some rather tasty sounding meals to share for May and hopefully some inspiration for us all as we plan our own menus.
It’s June and that usually signals a change in our menus. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is upon us and that often means lighter fare, more fresh produce and perhaps some grilled meals. Let’s see if that approach applied with vintage menu plans, as well.
Summer is well and truly upon us, at least here in Oklahoma. We have seen temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indexes well over 100 this past week. Honestly, about now I’d be happy to skip cooking and settle for sandwiches. But our vintage housewives didn’t resort to this very often and I try not to, either. Let’s take a look at what our housewife had on her vintage menu plans for the month of July.
I hope you’ve been enjoying these vintage menu plans. To me, they are like a little time capsule from a different era, one in which meals were eaten together at the table and much care went into the planning and preparation. Times change and while we might not always have time for meals like these, I do believe they can inspire us to at least occasionally elevate the dinner table experience.
It’s still pretty warm here in Oklahoma but mornings are cooler. I’m definitely getting a few Autumn vibes. And that means we’ll begin to see fall produce replace summer varieties. Our vintage menu plans will start to feature seasonal fruits and vegetables such as apples, pumpkins, pears, cabbage and sweet potatoes, for instance.
We are now fully into the fall season here in the Northern Hemisphere and that calls for hearty meals. Sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and acorn squash are in season so they are good choices to feature in our Vintage Menu Plans this month.
Cold weather descended upon Oklahoma a few days ago so hearty foods finally sound appealing. This month’s vintage menu plans include cozy winter meals such as beef stew, baked ham and of course, a traditional Thanksgiving menu. Sweet potatoes, cranberries and acorn squash are a few of the seasonal items you’ll find in our November Vintage Menu Plan.
Here we are…it’s already December! And that means we’ve now completed an entire year of Vintage Menu Plans. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. Please let me know if you’d like me to do another series like this. Perhaps from a different era. I think it’s really interesting to see how people ate in different time periods. And now let’s see what’s cooking in December!
*This series began in January of 2023. Each month’s menus are posted on the first or second of the month. Keep checking back for the latest menus!
This is the cookbook where I found these menus (mine is the 1976 edition):
