No-Spend January Update ~ 2023

January 31, 2023 By Deanna Piercy 3 Comments

We’ve made it to the end of our January no-spend month. So, how did it go? Did I adhere to my stated goals? How much did I spend on groceries? Any slip ups? Let’s review!

NO-SPEND JANUARY
an update

If you didn’t read my post about doing this challenge you can read it here:

5 Reasons to do a No-Spend Month

– First up, let’s talk about groceries. Here is what I spent over the course of the month:

  • 1-6-23 (Braum’s) $18.12
  • 1-9-23 (Pruett’s) $18.44 (I only needed a can of pie filling for Chris’ birthday cobbler for $5.29; the rest was for my mom)
  • 1-13-23 (Pruett’s) $78.99 (I sent David for a few items but he came home with more.)
  • 1-23-23 (Pruett’s) $72.35

Total: $187.90 (minus about $13 for my mom)

That was more than I intended to spend but so much less than my usual grocery budget that I’m happy with it.

– We bought Chris’ birthday gifts as planned.

– I only got the Amazon Subscribe & Save items we really needed this month. We did, however, purchase a few items for our offices which I was setting up this month. I moved my curtains to my new office and bought valances for David’s windows (only $25!). I also needed curtain rods for my office ($36) and a desk pad for my new desk ($22). We bought an inflatable mattress and bedding for David’s office so he can isolate there after his business trips.

– Gasoline. I bought one tank of gas for my Prius and then I don’t think I’ve driven since.

– Take out lunches. I planned one per week but I think we only did two. David was gone for about 10 days of this month.

– Take out dinners. We bought sushi for Chris’ birthday. Chris bought Mexican food one night for us when David was away. And that was all.

– I meant to look over our subscriptions/streaming services but didn’t get around to that. We do tend to watch more during the cold months so perhaps it’s best to evaluate them when the weather begins to warm up.

– Other: I did place an Amazon order yesterday. I used a gift card and bought the books and vinyl album for the LWD monthly posts (book club, poet, artist, composer). I could have waited until Wednesday but wanted to be able to start the books on the first of the month.

Wrap Up:

Over all I am pleased with how I did. And I still have so much food on hand that I will continue to keep grocery shopping to a minimum this month.

Did you join me for No-Spend January? If so, how did it go? Leave me a comment and we’ll chat about it. πŸ™‚

Wow! That’s an impressive grocery bill. We have a year round garden and a freezer filled with fish and game, yet I spend at least $130 weekly at the grocery store for our family of 5.

Oh, I usually spend a LOT more than that. But I had an extremely well-stocked pantry and freezer to eat from. πŸ™‚

Glad you at least managed to reduce your spending for January.
