It’s been just a bit over a month since our last monthly grocery haul so Lisa and I headed to the city on Wednesday to stock up again. As always, we enjoyed our time together while accomplishing an important task. We started out with a quick stop at the local farmers market so I could pick up some local peaches and then we headed off to Oklahoma City. After a nice lunch at TapWerks in Bricktown we were ready to get down to business.
July 2017 Grocery Haul
If you follow me and/or Lisa on Instagram you likely saw some of our pictures from this trip. We try to remember to take a picture at each stop. I’m sure people think we are weird. And perhaps they aren’t that far off the mark. Oh, well. We actually enjoy these monthly excursions together and it’s nice knowing that we are well-stocked for the month.

And here is what all that looks like spread out on my kitchen table:
A few notes about my purchases:
You may have noticed that the only meat I bought was the boars head sausage (it was on sale for $1.99 a package instead of over $7!) and fresh chicken sausages (on sale at Whole Foods). I already had three packages of chicken, a pork tenderloin, a couple of packages of grass fed beef, a round steak, bacon and some sausages for the grill in the freezer. Oh, and a turkey breast! Not only do I want to use these items already on hand, but we are also going to be eating less meat and more fish. Our local Aldi’s has a good selection of sustainably caught seafood so I’ll be picking up a couple of packages a week. I didn’t buy milk because I can get organic milk at Aldi’s.
I was also well-stocked on various types of pasta, white and brown rice, lentils, various types of beans, farrow and couscous – all of which we will eating more of as we transition to a Mediterranean diet. I did buy some quinoa for a recipe I want to try.
Aside from a few random items, dark chocolate (I’m cutting way back on sugar but allowing myself a tiny piece of dark chocolate per day), and cheese, the bulk of my purchases were fruits and vegetables. We’ve always eaten a fair amount of produce but I’m upping those quantities even more. I’ll need to purchase more throughout this next month but I should be able to get what I need at the farmers market.
Here we are just before heading out on our shopping adventure:
After shopping five stores in 100 degree heat we didn’t even consider an “after” selfie – ha!
Here’s what the car looked like after our final stop, though:
A Prius holds a lot more than you might think!
I cleaned out the fridge and organized the pantry before this trip. Would you like to see some pictures?
The refrigerator is packed! I’ll be cutting up that pineapple tonight and making a big fruit salad which will free up some space.
The top portion of our pantry. It’s hard to tell from the photo but this built-in pantry is very deep so there’s a lot more in it than what you can see here.
The bottom portion of the pantry has pull-out drawers. This is where I keep things like pasta, rice, beans, lentils, crackers and chips.
I didn’t take a picture but that center section of the pantry holds the microwave and boxes of cereal. In addition to this pantry, I have a baking center with two cupboards for baking ingredients, a cabinet for teas, coffees and some alcoholic items that we tend to use in the kitchen such as Bailey’s for David’s coffee, whiskey and cognac that I cook with. By the stove I have an upper cabinet devoted to herbs and spices. I also have big buckets in a nearby storage closet which hold bulk items such as oatmeal, beans, wheat and sugar. One of these days I’ll get all of these sorted at the same time, take photos and share them all with you. Stay tuned but don’t hold your breath – ha!

Well, if you’re weird for posting it, then I’m weird for reading it. You know I love your blog, but I can easily say this is always my favorite post of the “quarter”? I could probably find some reason to explain that, but I’ll just be honest and say I’m nosy about what other people buy for groceries!! How is David handling the switch to a larger percentage of fish in y’alls diet? I know he isn’t a big fan…
Deanna Piercy says
Lisa and I are the same way about other people’s groceries. I have no idea why I find it so fascinating. As for the fish thing, we just started so I’m not sure how it will go for him. He’s willing to give it a try but I’m keeping boneless chicken breasts on hand for him just in case. 😉

I’m another person who enjoys reading these posts. I know I’m just nosy though. The main reason I started reading blogs is because I like poking my nose in to other people’s lives and homes. 😉
Nice to see all those tasty fruits and veggies on your list.
Deanna Piercy says
Ha! My daughter and I openly admit we are nosy.
We are really enjoying all the fresh produce this time of year. I just had some fresh pineapple and a local peach with my lunch. Yum!

This post makes me realize just how fast a month goes by! Seems like I was just reading last month’s grocery haul post 2 days ago.
What do you use chickpea crumbs for? I love chickpeas but have never heard of that.
Deanna Piercy says
It does just zip on by, doesn’t it? I’ve never tried the chickpea crumbs – just saw them. I’m going to use them to bread fish and perhaps as a topping on vegetable casseroles to up the protein.

I love these posts! But I do have a question. Do you check online sale ads for the different stores before coming? I’m just curious because most of the time I just stick with Sprouts for everything. Are you going to the different stores simply because they have great deals or there are things you prefer at the different ones? Just curious! Or nosy.
I live in the same Metro area where you shop so just wondered.
Deanna Piercy says
Lisa checks sales and then tells me about them – ha! We generally start with Sprouts because they often have the best sales. Trader Joe’s also has good prices and carries some things not available anywhere else (and they have gorgeous flowers!). We save Whole Foods for last for things we haven’t been able to find elsewhere and sale items. They also have an excellent meat department, fabulous produce and bakery.
We ought to meet up on one of our trips sometime!
Karla Neese says
That makes sense and that’s the order I’d shop them as well for the same reasons.
I’d love that! I’d have to meet for lunch somewhere though as I work full time.
Would love to meet up with you for a quick bite to eat one of these times! Just let me know.
I work up by Lake Hefner so pretty central to both Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s area.
Deanna Piercy says
I’ll bet we can work in lunch one of these days. 🙂
