A couple of years ago, right after Christmas, I treated myself to the boxed set of Julia Child’s masterpiece, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”. I’d longed to own them and when Amazon offered the set as one of their special deals I just had to do it.
I’ve browsed through them but must admit I haven’t cooked a single recipe from them. I thought I might be inspired to do a Julie Powell-style year of cooking through the books (although I knew I would skip the grisly lobster scene). I adored reading her book, “Julie and Julia” which I had stumbled upon in our library book sale and read well before the movie was made. And I’ve been a fan of Julia Child since I was quite young. However, for a variety of reasons I haven’t so much as flambe´ed a banana since purchasing the cookbooks.
Several weeks ago someone on the French Chic Yahoo Group to which I’ve belonged for years, shared an article about a group of women in New Orleans who formed a Julia Child cooking club. They meet every 4 to 6 weeks and cook a meal from Julia’s recipes. You can read the entertaining article here.
It got me thinking that it would be such fun to do something similar. Now I’m mentally going through my friends trying to decide who might be interested in being part of my scheme. I can easily think of several who don’t live around here but I’ll bet I can round up a few willing cohorts locally.
I’m going to give this some serious thought and if I pull it off, I’ll be sure to let you know.
