Saturday has become grocery haul day during “this time”. My daughter places our order (and my parents’) through Instacart and our Aldi order is delivered to her porch. We’ve generally done pretty well getting the items we need but this week there was no lettuce of any kind, no cabbage and no eggs.
David went with me this time to pick up our groceries. We stopped by the fire station (he’s a volunteer firefighter) so he could get a pair of gloves to use while putting gas in my car. Since he has a good mask with a filter he decided to pick up the things missing from our Aldi order at Pruitt’s, a regional grocery store.
The Walmart parking lot was packed but there were only about 20 cars at Pruitt’s and some of those were likely employees. He got the items on my list (lettuce, eggs, cabbage) and the fiber cereal he eats that we can’t seem to find anywhere else. And then he got a little “inspired”. You’ll see what I mean in the list below.

I no longer place grocery bags on the counter. They go on the floor and I sanitize each item before putting it away. There are differing opinions on whether that is necessary but I figure it’s not worth taking any chances.
For the most part, my grocery needs include dairy, produce and bread products. The granola bars were a request from Chris and the chocolate is for me. Yes, I consider that essential – ha!
Aldi:
- organic milk – 1/2 gallon
- half and half – 1 quart
- cream cheese – 2 pkgs.
- sharp cheddar (8 oz.) – 2 pkgs.
- feta cheese
- bagels
- hamburger buns
- sandwich bread
- flour tortillas
- russet potatoes – 10 pounds
- apples – 1 bag
- mandarin oranges – 1 bag
- grape tomatoes
- BBQ chips
- granola bars (2 boxes)
- dark chocolate sea salt bar
David was able to get the items I requested. He also stocked up on cereal. The canned soups are for him to take to work whenever I don’t have leftovers for his lunch. That has only happened once in the past several weeks but it’s not a bad idea to be prepared. As for the rest of it? Well, he’s still having to go to work each day so if the man wants bacon and Doritos, so be it.
Pruitt’s (local grocery store):
- cereal (5 boxes)
- iceberg lettuce (2)
- cabbage
- eggs (2 dozen)
- frozen pizzas (2)
- hot dogs
- Dr. Pepper (12 pk.)
- La Croix
- canned soups (9)
- tortilla chips
- Doritos
- club crackers
- Ritz crackers
- bacon
We also did something else after getting groceries that we hadn’t done for weeks. We picked up pizza. This was David’s suggestion and after having cooked for 38 days in a row, I was more than ready. He called in the order and when it was ready we pulled up to the curb and I opened the back of the Prius. David had paid via credit card over the phone but we left a generous tip in the back of the car for the employee who brought the pizza out to the car.
When we got home David set the boxes on a stool rather than the counter. When we were ready to eat he held the pizza box open, I put the pizza slices on plates, and then he carefully washed his hands. We also microwaved each plate for 45 seconds before eating. I had been hesitant to get prepared food but from what I’ve read, I think this was a safe way to do so.
And may I just say that was the best pizza I’ve ever had? No, it really wasn’t anything special but after weeks of preparing every single meal at home it was a real treat. But now we are back to eating at home.

Wait… There are people who don’t consider chocolate essential? *looks shocked*
I’m glad you were able to get hold of everything you needed and wanted. Also, there’s nothing wrong with having the odd contactless delivery. I don’t know about over there, but I know over here the people are being extra careful when preparing and packaging the food, and the delivery people are being careful and also wearing gloves and masks, so we risked it the other day too, especially when we learned that Oscars (our favourite cafe) is doing deliveries for the time being. We got to justify it even more by pointing out we were helping a small local business – and some friends, since we do consider them friends – cope financially during these tough times. 😉

Ha! Chocolate is essential as far as I’m concerned.
One suggestion I’ve read, that we keep meaning to do, is to buy gift certificates for favorite local restaurants to help keep them afloat now and then we’ll be able to enjoy them later. I’m really missing a local Mexican restaurant.
