Welcome to the fifth week of July’s LWD Grocery Haul series in which I share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you are finding this series interesting and helpful.

Pantry/Freezer Challenge Month Update

I plan to continue this effort through August as it seems I have barely made a dent in my food stores. If you are also doing this challenge, I’d love to hear how it’s going for you.

Is everyone else continuing to see rising prices like I am? I’ve been paying $1.99 for iceberg lettuce but this week it jumped to $2.99. From what I read there are a number of factors responsible for lettuce price increases – weather, climate change, an insect-borne virus (impatiens necrotic spot virus), rising production costs, and ICE raids.

We enjoy a side salad with most of our dinners but I may start substituting homemade coleslaw for some of those. I’ve also thought about getting one of those hydroponic things for growing lettuce indoors. If you have one, I’d love to hear your thoughts about how well they work.

Our weekly menu…

We were “on menu” so far until tonight. I have had a busy day and when David mentioned Chinese takeout, I was totally on board. I did feel momentarily guilty since we are going out for Mexican tomorrow, but I got over it – ha! We have some friends who have been wanting to go out to dinner with us but it’s been too hot for outdoor dining. However, we have a bit of a break in the weather tomorrow so we are taking advantage of that. I will move our previously planned meals to this weekend or early next week.
