Homemade cranberry sauce is probably the simplest part of the traditional Thanksgiving meal. If you are still serving that stuff from a can – complete with High Fructose Corn Syrup – then allow me to share how easy it is to make the real stuff.
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 bag of fresh cranberries (12 oz. package)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water or orange juice (or half water and half orange juice)
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in saucepan. Bring to boil then simmer until the berries pop and it reaches your preferred texture, stirring occasionally. Chill until ready to serve.
Yep, that’s all there is to it. You can also add about 1/2 cup of apricot preserves after it’s cooked. Chill and then serve spooned over a block of cream cheese. Serve with crackers as a festive appetizer.
See? There’s no reason to resort to the canned stuff. My daughter did a post about this a couple of years ago, including photos. You can see it here.
I mostly make my own cranberry sauce, but when I plan to cheat, I check labels… There are a few out there almost as good as home made. Only almost, mind you. But sometimes I know there’s no way I’ll be able to make everything, so make do on a few things. I wish I didn’t have to; wish I could make everything from scratch. But there are times when that would be impossible for me due to the exhaustion caused by health issues.
I hurt my back yesterday so I cut corners today with pie crust. We do what we have to do, right?
Absolutely!
Hope your back isn’t hurt too badly, and feels better soon.
