A few years ago I wrote a post about preparing for winter and fully planned to write a “Part 2”. It’s only been three years but here it is…finally! In “How to Prepare for Winter: Part 2” we will explore more ways to prepare for cold weather and more time indoors.

6 Ways to Prepare for Winter: Part 2
1. Hygge…
By now most everyone has heard of the Danish concept of “hygge”:
“a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).”
One of the best ways to not only survive but maybe even embrace winter is to create a hygge environment in your home. Candles, hot drinks, lamps instead of overhead lights, twinkle lights, etc. can give your home that special, cozy atmosphere. You can even create your very own “hygge corner”.

2. Fun…
It’s easy to have fun in the summer time but with a bit of planning you can also have fun in the winter. Make sure you have board games, a deck of cards, a puzzle or two, and new movies to watch. Lay in a supply of new books and maybe indulge in a beautiful edition of an old favorite. Look for books set in winter time. Or do the opposite and read about sunny locales.
3. Plan a project or two…
Winter can be the perfect time to take on a project or two. Clean out the basement, redecorate a room, or finally get all those old photos into albums. Having a completed project at the end of winter can be very rewarding.
4. Protect your mental health…
Many of us experience some degree of Seasonal Affective Disorder during the dark days of winter. Head this off by being proactive. Be sure to exercise, eat well, deal with stress, get natural sunlight and reach out to others. A light box can also be very helpful. Don’t wait until you are feeling seriously depressed. Take steps to prevent SAD instead.
5. Create an exercise plan…
The easiest way to cope with winter is to curl up with a good book, a cup of tea and plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies. And while that is certainly a delightful activity, too much of it without enough activity will find you out of shape and carrying excess pounds at the beginning of spring. Not only will a good exercise plan keep the pounds off but it can also help fight the winter blues. With gyms currently not the safest place to be just now, you can still put together a fitness plan using YouTube videos, hand weights, a yoga mat and other simple equipment.
6. Lay in a supply of firewood…
If you have a wood burning fireplace or stove, be sure you have a good supply of firewood on hand. Is there anything cozier than sipping hot cocoa by a roaring fire?
