IN MY HOME:
REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
David had business in Houston last week and I went with him. Our 42nd anniversary was Tuesday, June 20th. He had made reservations at a nice restaurant with outdoor dining but there was a heat wave in Houston. We didn’t think it would be very pleasant to eat outdoors when it was still nearly 100 degrees in the evening. We cancelled our reservations and picked up food to eat in our hotel room. We ordered curbside from Pappacito’s and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.
One thing we’ve decided is that I need to put together a little dining kit to take with us on the road. I’m not a fan of eating out of to-go containers with plastic flatware. I have some vintage melamine plates that would be perfect for this purpose. I gave away an old set of inexpensive flatware a few years ago so I’ll need to order some. I see that Amazon has some travel sets that aren’t very expensive. I think something like this would work:
I might even throw in some cloth napkins and placemats. And how about a candle? Might as well make it as pleasant as possible, right?
THIS WEEK
Top priority for this week is to get one of our mama cats spayed. I don’t think I’ve shared our cat/kitten story here. I think it was sometime in March when two young, female cats showed up. They were very friendly so obviously not feral strays. And it was soon apparent that they were both pregnant. I suspect that’s why they were dumped off near us. That annoys me to no end! Lilith had her kittens on April 20th and Daphne had hers a few days later. Fortunately they only had a total of five between them. But that is enough! They share nursing duties and the kittens are also eating cat food so I feel comfortable taking one at a time to be spayed. Lilith this week and Daphne next. Maybe we can get a group rate when the kittens are old enough to be spayed/neutered…
I also need to pick up soil/planting mix for our front flower beds and then get something planted in them. I keep putting it off for one reason or another. Mainly because I’m not sure what I want to plant. I want something hardy and low-maintenance for the shrubs. And I’d really like the flowers to be native wildflowers. Trouble is, these beds are across the front of the house which faces North. The ends get some sun but the majority is pretty shady. I had ivy in this before and it did great until this winter, for some reason and then it all died. We lost some trees, as well. Apparently it was a hard winter.
I haven’t done a full-on grocery order since June 2nd. I’ve been using things we had on hand and have picked up a few items at Braum’s a couple of times. We’ve also been out of town 8 days this month. Yesterday I went to Braum’s (regional dairy store with some groceries) and got bread, lettuce, a tomato, cream, cheddar cheese (sliced and chunk), black forest ham lunch meat, bananas, cherries, a package of chicken breasts and a carton of strawberry ice cream. That will hold us until Thursday or Friday when I’ll place an order. I haven’t decided if I’ll order from Aldi or Pruett’s (local grocery store). I have orders started for both so I’ll see which has the larger percentage of what I need.
WORK
I’d like to finish scheduling blog-related social media for the rest of the summer this week. That’s the goal! I’m hoping to take the month of July “off” as much as possible in order to work on a writing project for NaNoWriMo. If you don’t “see” much of me here on the blog or on Facebook for a few weeks, that’s the reason.
READING
I finished reading “The Willing Widow” last week. I had started it ages ago but hadn’t finished it. I now see it’s the first in a series. The series is written by a mother/daughter pair which I think is pretty cool. I’ll probably read the others in the series.
David and I finished listening to “Your Table is Ready” on our drive to and from Houston last week. If you liked Anthony Bourdain’s book, “Kitchen Confidential” I think you’d like this one, too. I told David that it made me wish I could spend a day in the kitchen and behind the scenes of one of our favorite, high end restaurants in New Orleans (Antoine’s or Commander’s Palace).
I have just a bit more of “The Custom of the Country” left and should finish it today.
I started this month’s LWD Book Club selection, “Rules For Visiting” last week at the hotel.
I’m also getting close to finishing an audiobook, “The Clutter Remedy: A Guide to Getting Organized For Those Who Love Their Stuff“.
SELF CARE
In my last “This Week” post I mentioned trying to get some peaches. I haven’t yet but I did send a private message to one of the peach growers in our area to see if they had any. I know a lot of the crop was destroyed because the trees blossomed in February, way too early. I’m still hoping to find some, though. I really want to make some homemade peach ice cream and a cobbler.
I’m really getting back into reading mode and finding that to be the best form of self care for me. More reading…less screen time!
HEALTH & FITNESS
I am back to my morning walks after being away from home last week. I did try to do a few laps back and forth in our hotel room each day but honestly, I was pretty sedentary. It felt good to take a walk this morning as it was still fairly cool. I also did my morning exercise routine, something I am trying to make a non-negotiable habit.
FUN ACTIVITIES
Saturday night we went to a local outdoor venue to hear live music. One of the bands we helped promote was back in town. So many friends were there and it was good to catch up. We haven’t been out much during the pandemic and everyone seemed so excited to see us. It felt good. 🙂
We’ve been invited to have dinner at the home of friends this Friday night. They are leaving for two weeks in Europe and want to get together before they go.
HABIT OF THE MONTH (June)
Concentrated, daily reading time has been my June habit and I’m happy to say it’s going well. I rewarded myself by purchasing (wait for it…) more books!
