Today is World Communion Sunday and as is our church’s custom, several ladies baked various types of bread, some representing other nations, for communion (including me). I took this photo with my iPhone just before the choir went up to sing. It’s hard to tell in this picture but the communion table is covered with a collection of cloths from around the world.
World Communion Sunday was started in 1933 by the pastor of a Presbyterian church in Pittsburgh. It was a dark time in our history. We were in the midst of the Great Depression with the threat of Nazism and Fascism taking hold in Europe.
“As a faith response to these concerns, a group of leaders at Shadyside Presbyterian Church sought to do something both real and symbolic to proclaim that God is God indeed, in spite of politics, economics and future shock.”
I’m glad our church continues to observe this special Sunday because heaven only knows we still need this reminder.
