My regular grocery store was out of the t-bone steaks I had on my menu. The reason I wanted them is because I’m going to be sharing some of the meals I grew up with in the 1960s and 1970s (you may have noticed that I bought more meat than usual and that this order included some things I don’t usually buy – such as bologna).

My family ate steak often when I was growing up but the steaks we ate were almost always t-bones which were way more common in that era. I did find that there is a small local store that sells Oklahoma-raised beef and they have t-bones. I will need to make a trip to town before Friday to pick some up. I’ll try to remember to come back and add them to this grocery haul post. I do know they are $16.99 a pound (gulp!).

Update: Three t-bone steaks from Legacy Ranch Beef were $60! That was a huge splurge but they were very tasty. David grilled them and I served with baked potatoes, corn, crescent rolls and wedge salads. We rarely eat out anymore so I suppose this was justified. There were enough leftovers for David and I to have tasty steak sandwiches for our lunches on Monday and Tuesday of this week. I also simmered the bones and made two jars of beef broth so I did my best to get everything out of the steaks that I could.

The other thing I couldn’t get were bone-in chicken breasts but my personal shopper said the butcher would order some for next week. That’s another change from my childhood. Boneless chicken was not common in those days. We usually purchased chicken in a package that contained a whole, cut up chicken. You could buy breasts only but they were always bone-in. Boneless chicken is easy but I do think bone-in tends to taste better. What do you think?
