Welcome to the fourth week of March’s LWD Grocery Haul series in which I share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you are finding this series interesting and helpful.

COSTCO:
This is my second Costco order. I hope we like the toilet paper since we now have 36 rolls of it – ha! This is my second month of not buying anything from my usual Amazon Subscribe and Save items. There may occasionally be something I cannot find elsewhere at a reasonable price but so far I’ve been able to do so. I will say that David had to buy a couple of items for the volunteer fire department and a few things for our (ongoing) bathroom remodeling project.
Speaking of which, would you like to see some photos when we get it done? I will start painting this weekend. This will likely take me at least a week since there is a lot of woodwork and trim which will take a lot of time and I’m a perfectionist. Plus I plan to do at least two coats or possibly three. Once I get it painted David will install the vanity, mirror and lighting. I then get to do the fun part – decorating!

Our weekly menu…
Monday menu change – David was out of town and I was wiped out after getting groceries, running errands, cooking for my mom and putting away groceries. I had a can of this soup in the pantry:
Nashville-Style Hot Chicken Soup
I heated it up while making grilled cheese sandwiches. I tasted the soup and oh, my goodness! I love spicy food but this was so HOT! I added about half a cup of 1/2 and 1/2 to tone it down a bit. It was STILL very, very spicy. Chris and I both liked it but even he said it was a bit much. I’ll buy it again because the flavor was really good but I’ll just plan to add about a cup of milk, cream or half and half.
The reason I had it in my pantry to begin with was as part of my winter respiratory illness preps. I like to keep some canned soups, pineapple juice, crackers and a few other things on hand over the winter. This year I specifically added some spicy soups and broths which I figure would be good if one were congested. Chris had a very mild case of COVID and enjoyed the cups of hot and spicy chicken ramen that I had on hand. I also bought a quart of spicy chicken broth which I haven’t used yet.
Fortunately David and I have stayed well. In fact, I haven’t had so much as a sniffle in about six years (shout out to vaccines and masks!). Knock on wood that we can keep it that way!
FEATURED RECIPE…
Classic Tacos ~ A Family Favorite
how do you buy your pineapple juice? at least I was thinking all I’d found was already chilled in the refrigerator sections at the store, and you couldn’t store it but maybe I’m misremembering
I like the little 6 oz. cans which don’t require refrigeration until opened. Dole is the brand I’ve purchased. I’m not sure if other brands make it or not.
I like the little 6 ounce cans as well. I have bought the big 46 ounce cans but it always seems to just linger in the fridge.
Please do share your bath when it’s all done. Exciting news here, we’re getting the kitchen painted! That will be the last item on the years long list of things to do to renovate the whole room. We’ve done it all as we could afford to do it, in stages with long waits between each stage but at last it will be done….Except for getting the cabinet pulls on the doors. We still need to do that.
These projects can really take a long time, right? I’ll bet you’ll be so excited to finish the kitchen.
I started painting today. So far I’ve done the baseboards in the linen closet, the trim around the linen closet and the entry to my closet, and the wainscoting on one of the short walls. It doesn’t sound like much but the trim is fairly intricate and there is a lot of it. Walls are kind of fun to paint but all this fussy part isn’t.
I don’t have my list with me but I usually buy the sale meat and some kind of fish. For 3 weeks in a row, I bought whole chickens because I wanted to save the backs for broth. I cut up these chickens into 9 pieces (including the backs) and Hubby grilled the other 8 pieces outside. We ate them with different sides until they were gone. We finished the last chicken on Thursday and I just divided my broth into small containers for the freezer. Tonight and tomorrow we’re having bacon, egg and leek pie. Hubby asked that we not have chicken for a while. Pork loin is on sale so I will get creative with that. I have a craving for radishes so they are on the list. And, of course, cheese. Our date night consists of dressing up, listening to jazz on the radio, and having cocktails with cheese and crackers. We often dance.
Oh, I love that date night idea! I might have to suggest that to David.
I haven’t made broth in a long time because my freezer is too full. I really, REALLY need to empty it out, defrost and no doubt toss some items at the bottom.
