Welcome to the second week of January’s LWD Grocery Haul series in which I share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you are finding this series interesting and helpful.

LWD GROCERY HAUL
January 2025 ~ Week Two
You may notice the laundry sanitizer (which I’ve never bought before) and the disinfecting bleach in this week’s grocery haul. We aren’t ill but with all the crud making the rounds I want to be prepared. I also bought a box of disposable gloves from Amazon…just in case.
Did you know that all bleach is not the same? I use Clorox “splash-less” bleach in my laundry when I wash kitchen towels, cleaning rags or the cat bedding. It’s fine for that purpose but it does not disinfect surfaces. You can read more about the difference here:
Fact check: It’s true, Clorox Splash-Less bleach does not disinfect surfaces
With Norovirus surging, I think it’s important to be prepared. And just in case you weren’t aware, ordinary alcohol-based hand sanitizers do NOT kill Norovirus. You need to be washing your hands very thoroughly with soap and water. For surface disinfecting, use bleach or another approved disinfectant.
My daughter has recently started using Force of Nature disinfectant and just wrote a blog post about it in case you are interested (I’m considering it myself!):
Honest Force of Nature Disinfectant Review
But in the meantime, bleach it is! And remember that bleach loses its effectiveness over time. It has a one year shelf life from the date of manufacture.
Now, on to more pleasant topics…like food!

Our weekly menu…
David was out of town Monday night so that was my cue to put fish on the menu. I wanted to keep it easy, though, so I bought frozen breaded fish fillets.
Chris’ birthday is Friday so I’ll be making his favorite enchiladas (I’ll link the recipe below). And like his dad, his birthday dessert of choice is either cherry pie or cobbler.

Good information on the splash-less bleach. I have been buying that as it seems every one of my house cleaning tee shirts has bleach spots. We buy large packages of chicken breasts to cook for our older dogs who can only have boiled chicken breasts because of their heart disease. I thought I was doing a good things by sanitizing the sinks after prepping the chicken to cook. Guess not. Have to get another jug of bleach to disinfect every thing from now on.

It surprised me when I first heard that about bleach. A friend shared something about it on Facebook early in the pandemic. Back when I was a nurse in the 90s and we were learning about proper sanitizing of surfaces, there weren’t different types available and I had failed to notice the change. Like you, I thought I was sanitizing my sink whenever I would cook a turkey and use my splash-less bleach. I didn’t mention it in the blog post and you may know this but it’s important to clean the area first with soap and hot water before using bleach. Then let the bleach set a few minutes to sanitize properly. A lot of people don’t realize the area should be cleaned before sanitizing. It’s not just one step.
