Welcome to the LWD Grocery Haul series. I’m going to share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you find this new series interesting.

LWD GROCERY HAUL
September 2024 ~ Week One
I’ve done numerous grocery hauls here on the blog over the years but they’ve been sporadic. I’ve decided to make this a weekly series. Groceries are one of the major regular purchases for the homemaker and many are finding it challenging to stay on budget.
I’ll also be doing some sample hauls utilizing the USDA food plans – thrifty, low, moderate and liberal along with menu plans.
This first haul is from the first week of September. We had been on vacation the week before so this was mostly a restocking of fresh foods for the refrigerator. We had returned on Sunday and I picked up a loaf of bread at a convenience store to get us by until my shopping trip on Tuesday (Monday was a holiday). I had tuna for sandwiches and other things in the freezer.
The store where I usually shop is a regional store and offers pickup service which is what I use. My shopper, Reba, is a real sweetheart and we’ve become friends over the past few years. She does a very good job picking out my items.
So here’s my shopping list:
Pruett’s (regional grocery store)
- heavy whipping cream $5.69
- cherry chip cake mix $1.69
- canola oil $5.12
- Greek yogurt 32 ounces $5.99
- yellow onions $1.03
- red grapes $4.80
- string cheese (24 count) $6.99
- tomatoes on the vine (4) $3.20
- green bell pepper $0.99
- red bell pepper $1.99
- bagels $3.59
- bananas (3) $1.07
- cottage cheese (16 oz.) $2.79
- cage-free eggs (1 doz.) $4.29
- frozen garlic toast $2.19
- Oscar Mayer ham $4.79
- Oscar Mayer turkey breast $4.79
- oranges (4 lb.) $5.99
- local peaches (4.18 lbs.) $8.32
- green onions $1.49
- coleslaw mix $1.99
- organic spinach $4.99
- hot dog buns $2.69
- cream cheese (spreadable) $3.99
- half and half (1 qt.) $3.99
- lactose free milk $4.69
- sweet relish $1.99
Total (minus sales tax, $5 pickup fee and tip): $101.13
Here was my planned menu from that week:
Changes in that menu plan:
We didn’t end up having dinner with extended family on Tuesday so I made black bean and corn tacos at home. We did meet up with friends at the Mexican restaurant patio on Wednesday. The rest of the menu was as planned.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this new series. Is there anything else you’d like me to add to these?

I always enjoy people’s grocery hauls. It gives me great ideas for meal planning. I haven’t shopped at Pruett’s up here in my area yet because it’s just not in the area I shop at They also took over ownership of Uptown Grocery. Is the personal shopper through the store or another service? I would love to have the same shopper consistently. I have had some wonderful ones through delivery but no idea if I could request the same person.

This shopper is employed by the store. She does other work there when she’s not shopping for people. My daughter does most of her shopping from Aldi via Instacart and she often gets a really wonderful shopper who knows the things she looks for and will let know when something is in stock. She also raises chickens and sometimes brings her eggs. I think that’s so sweet. 🙂

I like to watch grocery hauls on YouTube and to see them on blogs too…Just one request, for price comparison purposes can you include the weight/volume of all the items? How much heavy cream did you purchase? You mention yellow onions, but how many, what was the weight? It’s only so I can see what prices run in other areas. For instance this week, I can buy 3 pound bags of yellow onions 2/$5 which is a savings of about 50c for three pounds at one store and almost $1 savings at a higher end grocery in our area.

Sure! Now that I know it’s of interest (I’ve had several tell me so) I’ll include more details. I may include some brand names and if I bought it on sale.
As for your questions, the heavy cream was a pint. I bought two onions that were 1.04 lbs. total weight.
