For the past 15 years, our usual Christmas morning tradition has been for Lisa and Justin to join Chris, David and me for homemade waffles and mimosas. After a tasty breakfast we open gifts. A few years ago our son-in-law, in a moment of sheer inspiration, drizzled a bit of Crown Royal Maple Whiskey over his waffles and Maple Whiskey Waffle Syrup was born.

Maple Whiskey Waffle Syrup
I took Justin’s brilliant idea and created this delicious syrup. Sometimes the maple flavored whiskey is hard to find so you can substitute vanilla or salted caramel flavor instead.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup real maple syrup
- 1/2 cup real butter, melted
- 1/8 to 1/4 cup Maple, Vanilla or Salted Caramel Crown Royal Whiskey
Directions:
Combine all ingredients and warm gently on stovetop or in microwave. Pour over homemade waffles and enjoy!
That’s it. Very simple but oh, so delicious.
We make our homemade waffles in a vintage waffle maker that belonged to David’s grandmother. I love thinking about her making waffles for her own family many years ago.
We serve our delicious waffles with bacon (cooked in the oven because I hate all the splattering) and Pillsbury canned orange rolls. Yes, I know that’s a little strange but they are a family favorite and I make them on holiday mornings. We also have coffee, hot tea and mimosas.
Do you have a Christmas breakfast tradition? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

I love the waffle idea, and the syrup sounds delicious. We always have homemade orange-glazed cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. My daughter works this year on Christmas, so we will be sharing our tradition with her work family as well this year. <3
