Well, sort of…but not exactly. I defrosted and re-organized my freezer this week, and have been working on my pantry. I’m sure I have enough food on hand to feed us for at least a month and that is what I’m going to try to do. I’ll still buy milk, eggs (unfortunately I am down to one chicken and she’s not laying right now), and fresh produce. But I am going to plan my meals from what we have on hand. In part, this is because I need to use some of these items that I have had for awhile. I also want to decrease the stock in my freezer to make room for the things I will want to put up from the garden and farmers market this spring and summer. And I think it will be an interesting creative pursuit.
Another inspiration for this comes from a blog I have really enjoyed reading this past year. It is These Days in French Life and is currently telling the story of one family’s attempt to have a Slow Year, a year of buying almost nothing. While I don’t intend to take it to her level (I have no interest in toilet paper alternatives), I do admire what she is doing and it makes me rethink my purchases.
Join me in the days to come as I share the menus and recipes for our meals coming from our current household stores. Of course, the irony of my posting this today is that David and I are going out to dinner tonight. We usually try to go out one night a week as our *date night* and this is something neither of us wants to give up at the moment.
