I asked…no, I begged…for just a nice trim. David told the groomer to leave it about an inch long. This is the result:
The groomer apologized profusely when David picked him up. Apparently, while his outer coat was fine, the dense, inner coat was simply too difficult to comb out. She gave David $30 off the grooming cost. He looks ridiculous but seems rather happy about it all. Oh, well. It will grow.

yeah well…. as long as you don't laugh around him, it'll be ok. give it a week or 2. And give him lots of treats…. i'm guessing the process was not easy for him.

My Maddie has a lovely coarse red coat over a very thick fine undercoat. It's the undercoat that sheds the most and mats up. I've cut out large bits of matted hair on her, but the thing that helps most is to brush brush brush. However, the standard dog brush doesn't quite work well. I started using a cheap plastic 'wet' brush (human kind) on her and with diligence we're down to just a few tiny mats. Maddie loves the brush, as it 'scratches' her just enough to feel like I'm treating her very well, lol. She'll even lie down and roll over so I can do the other side and her belly too. I think I paid $1 for that brush. I've got my eye out for another.

He actually doesn't seem to mind going to the groomer. They love him dearly and in fact, were among those who donated to help pay for his surgery before we got him. David did buy him a huge bone which he is enjoying.

Terri, thanks for the brush suggestion! I brush him all the time and he looked beautiful but apparently I wasn't getting down to that dense undercoat. I'll pick up a new brush and start using it now before it grows out.

Aw. He's still super cute. 🙂

He looks great! Our vet recommended shaving our Great Pyr and they really did shave him. It was terrible! They left his head and tail bushy and whenever his tail wagged it touched his shaved skin and freaked him out. I vowed to never do that to him again. However, his coat was always matted and he hated to be brushed. We really needed some middle ground. Maybe next time Shiloh will have a good undercoat.

Shiloh likes to be brushed well enough and now that we know about the undercoat issue we'll try to keep it from getting matted so next year we can just have him trimmed. He looks ridiculous but I must admit it has dramatically cut down on my vacuuming.
