This is the way we mop our floors

May 27, 2006 By Deanna Piercy Leave a Comment

This is the way we mop our floors, mop our floors, mop our floors…

I’ve spent quite a bit of time decluttering lately, at the expensive of other household chores. Like mopping the kitchen, for instance. Since we don’t have toddlers spilling things, it wasn’t horrible, but it still needed a good scrubbing. It also needs to be stripped and waxed but that ain’t happenin’ today! Or tomorrow, or…

While cleaning the floor I noticed a number of other things that I really need to do in the kitchen. The curtains need to be washed; some of my plants need to be repotted; the windows need to be washed — inside and out; the light fixtures need to be cleaned. I think I will make a list of each individual task (I’m a fabulous list maker!) and next week start doing at least one a day until the kitchen is done. I’ve already cleaned out a couple of cupboards but need to finish the others. I also need to do a little bit of touch up painting. I keep a small glass jar of the paint we used in the kitchen so I can easily touch up little nicks. Of course, what I really need to do is finish painting the kitchen. It was such a huge remodeling project and after MONTHS and MONTHS of work we lost momentum. We may be the only ones who notice it but the baseboards under the counters only got a coat of primer. Same with the wall under the bar, although it faces away from the kitchen entrance and isn’t very visible. Plus, the primer is white like the rest of the woodwork so it’s not terribly noticeable. Still, my dear husband would be ever so pleased if I were to finish this. Maybe one of these days this summer.

A few days ago I got out the plastic, lidded box in which I keep my meager sewing supplies (I do not sew if I can help it). This is the same box I had at our previous home and it hasn’t been cleaned out in at least 10 years. After I did the little mending job which caused me to get out this box, I decided to sort it out. In addition to the items that belonged in there, I also found:

-two broken ceramic items needing repair
-a handful of change
-several ponytail holders, bows, and barrettes
-two keys belonging to who knows what
-various bolts, screws, and pieces of things
-a baby tooth

Yes, you read that right. One of the kids’ baby teeth. Why? I haven’t a clue. I threw away the tooth and other things we didn’t need, then put things that belonged elsewhere, elsewhere. Now my little sewing box only contains sewing items. Well, the two little broken ceramic items are still in there. Each belonged to one of my grandmothers so I couldn’t bear to part with them. All they need is a minor repair. Perhaps if I buy the right kind of adhesive I could actually fix and display them. Hey, anything is possible!

Chris picked up new bookshelves and a dvd holder at Wal Mart the other day. David helped him put the shelves together so perhaps he can start getting these items picked up off the floor and organized. I did remind him that he has to vacuum the area of the floor where he plans to put the shelves, before he starts putting books in them. I don’t know when he will get around to this. He and David are trying to get caught up with the mowing this weekend. Nature is trying really hard to revert back to its natural state around here. It is such a jungle that I fully expect to see brightly colored parrots in the trees and maybe even a monkey or two. Chris then leaves for Cancun on Wednesday. Yes, life is really rough for him.
