IN MY HOME:
REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
MONDAY…
I made a very tasty Mexican casserole for dinner. The secret ingredient? Some leftover mashed potatoes in the sauce which made it nice and creamy.
TUESDAY…
David had an eye appointment (post-cataract surgery checkup) at 4:45 p.m. and then we headed to OKC. We grabbed a quick dinner at Sonic on the way there.
We were upgraded to a suite which was nice. However, there were a couple of issues. First of all the desk lampshade was off and sitting on the desk. Someone had tried to put it on incorrectly but David figured it out, reversed a part and fixed it. No problem. However, the toilet that wouldn’t flush properly *was* a problem and that required a hotel repairman. We don’t travel with plumbing equipment – ha!
WEDNESDAY…
We mostly just relaxed in the room although David also had some work to do. He was supposed to be off but he was in the midst of negotiating the purchase of several trucks and had to deal with that. We had a late room service breakfast and then an early dinner. We were the only diners in the hotel restaurant and had a very nice meal. We then drove around the downtown historic neighborhoods to see the Christmas lights. There were some truly gorgeous displays. We listened to my LWD Christmas playlist as we drove:
THURSDAY…
David was up early again, still dealing with work issues. We checked out at noon and picked up lunch at Subway. David had ordered big tool chests for work and called to see if they were in. They were, so we drove to Shawnee to pick up them up. We then got Starbucks and I noticed there was a Petsmart across the road. We’ve had trouble getting a particular cat food for my mom’s elderly cat and her Amazon order wasn’t supposed to be there until tomorrow. I ran in quickly and was able to get a few packages. We then headed for home, after dropping off the tool chests at the shop.
I made homemade macaroni and cheese, mixed veggies and salad for dinner.
While in OKC we watched the final couple of episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. So it was time to start new bedtime series. We love watching old shows before going to sleep at night. So far we’ve watched The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Odd Couple, Father Knows Best and The Andy Griffith Show. We also watched Ted Lasso which, while not an old series, was really heart warming. We have now started Dennis the Menace.
FRIDAY…
I picked up a grocery order. Part of it was for my mom and I also had her Amazon order of cat food and cat litter. When I just have a few things for her she will sometimes meet me halfway but I knew the boxes of cat food and litter would be too heavy for her. I drove out to her house and carried everything in for her. Fortunately David helped me carry in our groceries when I got home because my hip is still acting up and all those trips up and down the steps into my mom’s house had just about done me in. It’s so aggravating to still be dealing with this.
I made a really tasty dinner. Here is the link to the recipe:
I served it with some homemade coleslaw and toasted pita bread.
SATURDAY…
David and I mostly relaxed in our library chairs. I wanted to give my hip a rest and he was dealing with gout and back pain. Is that what aging is all about? First one pain and then another? As my uncle so often says, getting old isn’t for sissies. Ha!
I also wrote a blog post (Vintage Menu Plans ~ December).
SUNDAY…
I washed sheets and the cat bedding. I remade the bed, ironing the top sheet and the pillowcases. I did quite a bit of blog work, scheduled social media, and figured out our menu for the week. I folded laundry, watered plants (indoors and out), swept the laundry room, vacuumed up dead leaves from a hanging plant in the kitchen, and cleaned the vacuum (emptied, washed the canister and the filters).
Around 10 p.m. the electricity went out. Pretty soon the family group chat lit up. Both families in town were also without electricity. They have a different power company in town and it was a rather large outage. Apparently it was a substation issue and they said it would be back on at 12:28 a.m. Not 12:27 or 12:29. That seemed rather specific.
Chris was sleeping on our sofa because he has a new mattress coming in a few days and had taken down his old bed so he could do a thorough cleaning. He woke up when the power came back on because there were a few lights on downstairs. He said they really were right about the time.
I still had a charge on my Kindle so I read for about an hour after we went to bed at about 10:30. Apparently we can go to bed at a reasonable time if we don’t have electricity!
THIS WEEK
After I get this post finished I’ll write the December email newsletter. I outlined it yesterday so it shouldn’t take more than an hour or so.
Tomorrow is a good friend’s 60th birthday. We’ll take his gift to him at his office.
I’ve got Zoom calls on Wednesday and Thursday. David has a doctor appointment Thursday.
I want to get at least a start on Christmas decorating. I also need to write our annual holiday letter with the goal of finishing cards this coming weekend.
WORK
In addition to writing the newsletter today and I want to update some older Christmas blog posts. I have several gift guide posts and need to make sure the items are still available.
READING
I didn’t finish any books this past week but made substantial progress on all three I have going. I expect to finish all three this week. Here is what I’m reading:
Kindle – Rules For Visiting
Audiobook – Love and Duty at Blackberry Farm
“Real” book – Home Sweet Maison: The French Art of Making a Home
If you don’t already have Audible, you can get a free trial here. We’ve definitely been enjoying it on long drives.
SELF CARE
I really need to give myself a manicure. My nails have become so thin and brittle that I really need to give them extra attention and keep a nail strengthening polish on them.
HEALTH & FITNESS
David bought new, more comfortable seat for the exercise bike and I have it all set up in my office. Even with my hip issue I can use this without much pain. No more excuses!
FUN ACTIVITIES
My daughter bought herself an Advent puzzle for this season and suggested I buy a different one. Next year we will swap. I’ve been enjoying it!
I bought myself two new Christmas CDs:
I also plan to watch a couple of Christmas movies this week.
HABIT OF THE MONTH (DECEMBER)
The LWD December Challenge is to exercise every day. It doesn’t have to be a 5 mile run or 2 hours in the gym…because, let’s face it, that’s NOT happening around here. But I do intend to use the exercise bike daily, along with some yoga and stretching.
Too often we wait until January to start a new exercise routine but I think it makes sense to offset holiday treats with exercise in December, too.
