Christmas Q & A
I’ll share my answers to each question and then I invite you to answer them yourself.
- What is your favorite Christmas tradition?
We make homemade waffles on Christmas morning in David’s grandmother’s old waffle maker and enjoy them with this yummy Whiskey Maple Syrup. My other favorite is our church candlelight Christmas Eve service which I’ve truly missed during the pandemic.
- What is your favorite Christmas movie?
No hesitation – “It’s a Wonderful Life“. It never fails to touch my heart. Traditionally we have watched this the night after we put up the Christmas tree.
- Do you send Christmas cards?
I have sent cards every year since we married in 1981. I also write a Christmas letter and have kept copies of every one I’ve written. One of these days I mean to collect them all in a book format and make copies for my kids. They are a bit of a family history.
- What is your favorite Christmas song?
This is harder than the favorite movie question for me. If we are talking traditional carol/hymn I would say “O, Holy Night”. One of our church soloists has often sung this from the balcony on Christmas Eve and it gets me every time.
- When do put up your Christmas tree?
It varies but rarely before the mid-December. I love to keep the tree up throughout much of January so I’m not in a big hurry. Some years it’s been rather late but when I watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” and they are trimming the tree on Christmas Eve I’m reminded that it’s okay and I’m not really late from a historical standpoint.
- When does your family open presents?
Christmas morning. When the kids were young I usually bought them new pajamas which they opened Christmas Eve. But otherwise we’ve always waited until Christmas morning.
- What do you have for Christmas dinner?
Our extended family traditionally gathers for a mid-day meal on Christmas Eve day that is similar to the usual Thanksgiving menu (turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, etc.).
On Christmas day we don’t have a specific meal. I’ve done lasagna, enchiladas, a small turkey breast, ham, or just a spread of appetizers. This year I’m planning to cook filet mignon (because I happen to have some in the freezer), baked potatoes and wedge salads.
- What is the quirkiest Christmas tradition your family has?
I don’t recall how it started exactly but after the kids were grown David and I began having grilled hot dogs and watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on Christmas Eve after getting home from church. If things haven’t been too hectic, I usually make homemade potato salad a day or so ahead to have with the hot dogs.
- What is your favorite holiday treat?
Ever since I was quite young I’ve enjoyed getting a box of chocolate covered cherries around the holidays. I bought myself a box a couple of days ago. But my very, very favorite is the Dark Bordeaux from See’s Candies. We’ve enjoyed See’s Candies my whole life (I grew up in California) and usually end up with a box or two for the holidays. These have usually been as assortment and my first pick is always the Bordeaux. Fortunately I’m the only one who really cares about that one and since I am allergic to the ones with nuts, I get this one. A few years ago I ordered myself a whole box of just Bordeaux and oh, what a treat that was!
- Are you good at wrapping gifts?
Yes. My mom taught me when I was a child and I’m rather detail oriented. I can also fold a fitted sheet but that’s a different subject. 🙂
- Real or artificial Christmas tree?
I grew up with a real tree and we continued that tradition until after Lisa’s first Christmas. She was six months old and had her first asthma attack. It turns out she was allergic to the tree. We’ve had an artificial tree ever since and honestly, I’ve come to prefer that. I like that we can put it up whenever the mood strikes and leave it up as long as desired without concern about it becoming a fire hazard.
- How did you learn the truth about Santa?
I think I was suspicious and I remember my mom telling me the truth when I was six years old. I remember that she and I were in the car – the red 1962 Chevy Bel Air my parents bought a few days before I was born. I have two younger brothers and she encouraged me to keep the secret from them. It made me feel rather grown up.
- What is the best Christmas gift you ever received?
This is another hard one. As a child it was a Madame Alexander baby doll (which I still have) and doll stroller that I got when I was six.
- If you had to be trapped in a Christmas movie, which one would you choose?
The Holiday. Not for the plot but that cosy cottage in England is just perfect.
- What makes Christmas special for you?
It’s a lovely time to be reminded of the great blessing of family. My favorite time is Christmas afternoon and throughout the coming week. All the work and busy-ness is over and I love to bask in the warmth and cozy afterglow. The house has been cleaned, there are good things to eat and always a new book or two to curl up with.
- How are you celebrating this year?
The pandemic has made things different for us as we have a few high risk folks in our immediate family. A crowded church service on Christmas Eve is too risky for me so I’ll watch it online. Then we’ll have our usual grilled hot dogs and watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. On Christmas morning our daughter and son-in-law will join us and our son who lives next door to open gifts. We’ll all test before hand and wear masks. After Lisa and Justin leave we’ll have homemade waffles with Chris. At some point we will see our “bonus kids” and granddaughter, as well as my mom. And as we’ve done the past few years, we will likely do a Zoom call with all the kids and probably play a game.
I’d love to hear your answers! And if you’d like to share these questions with friends and family, here is a free printable for you:

I love The Holiday for the cottage as well! And admit freely that Jude Law doesn’t hurt the eyes in that film either, lol.
I really enjoyed this! Thank you for sharing.
