I do hope you are enjoying this art appreciation series as much as I am. It’s good to stretch ourselves a bit now and then, right? There is so much beauty available to us if only we make an effort to seek it out and enjoy it. Let’s take a look at the June selections.

ART APPRECIATION
JUNE 2023
POET
In keeping with the idea of selecting people born in the current month for this series, I’ve chosen Nikki Giovanni for our June poet. She was born June 7, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee. I first became aware of her perhaps a decade ago when I heard some of her poetry on a podcast or radio program. I can’t recall exactly but I do know I was listening in my car. I was captivated by her work and look forward to diving into it more deeply this month.
ARTIST
Like our poet, this month’s artist was born on June 7th but in 1848, almost a century prior. Paul Gauguin was a French post-impressionist artist. Like so many others, his art was generally unappreciated until after his death. His work inspired others such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

COMPOSER
Igor Stravinsky, a Russian-born composer, was born June 5th (my husband’s birthday!) in 1882.

CLASSIC FILM
This month’s classic film is far from “high brow” but it’s such a fun movie. And perfect for the beginning of summer! I can’t wait to watch this one again.
