Today is the first day of summer and I find myself thinking back on the summers of my childhood. I grew up with six cousins nearby, as well as my two younger brothers. My mom and two aunts often did things together with all of us. Or sometimes one of the moms would take all the kids which I’m sure was a welcome break for the other moms.
I remember at least a couple of summers where my mom took several of us for swimming lessons each day for a couple of weeks. I really can’t say I enjoyed the lessons (I despise putting my head under water or having water splashed on my face) but I do have fond memories of lunch afterward. We’d all pile in the station wagon after the lesson — tired, damp and a little chilled — and mom would drive through Naugles or Del Taco to get us hamburgers. I consider myself a foodie but despite all the wonderful meals I’ve had in my life, I don’t believe anything has ever tasted as good as those hamburgers eaten on our way home from swimming lessons.
