November 17th has been designated “National Unfriend Day”. The idea is to get rid of all your annoying Facebook friends that day. Over time, nearly all of us end up with at least a few “friends” (or sometimes even relatives!) we wish we hadn’t approved in the first place. Now we have the perfect opportunity to do something about it. And because every important holiday should have a song, War has re-recorded one of theirs in honor of “National Unfriend Day”:
Personally, I have chosen to make use of that helpful Facebook feature “hide” rather than unfriend people whose posts drive me nuts. I know, I know…I should just get rid of them but I hate to hurt people’s feelings. I also have a group set up for people who don’t have access to my wall and can’t see my status updates. Sometimes that’s for their own good (virtually all friends under the age of 18 are put in this group) and sometimes it’s for my own. There’s a part of me that would like to whittle down my list but part of the problem is that sometimes I have no idea how I *know* a particular person on my list. Am I in another online group with them? Are they a close friend of a friend who liked my comments and sent me a friend request? Are they a subscriber to my newsletter or a reader of one of my blogs? So for now, I don’t unfriend anyone unless they are a threat (I did have to block one nefarious character). Although I might expand that to include those I see making racist, hateful, bigoted remarks. In fact, no “might” about it; those people are gone.
So, are you going to celebrate November 17th by trimming your friends list? I do hope I make the cut. 😉

I have only dropped a couple of people as friends. Like you, I make extensive use of the "hide" feature.
I see you're doing NaNo. I'm trying it for the first time. Phew!

I won't drop anybody. I do wonder how many hide me though 🙂

Don't hide me, Deanna! Please, please, please. I won't get tired of Pirate updates.
I've already pared my friend list down. No need to do any more damage to it. 😉

I've recently paired down my friend list, so as of now, it's pretty "tight". I hear ya though about getting rid of those guilty of posting rude or inappropriate comments…there are some things I just don't want popping up on my screen!

Cap'n Franko: I sign up for NaNo every year and then don't do it. LOL! We have been out of town since the end of October and just got home late last night. I'm trying to decide whether to start this late or not. Good luck with yours!
Stephanie: I'm sure lots of people hide me. 😉
Jaci: I would never hide you. 🙂
KD: Sometimes I get the urge to tighten up my list but it's pretty handy to have easy access to most people I know all in one place. For now, I'll just use the "hide" feature.

I don't unfriend but I have started hiding people, especially those who play farmville, etc. I am curious as to how many people hide me as well. 😉 This reminds me that I need to make some adjustments as to who can see my wall…

Cherie,
I block all FB applications, which keeps the app updates off my feed while still allowing me to see the person's other posts. I only hide people when I don't want to see anything they post but I'm not quite prepared to unfriend them.
