IN MY HOME:
REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
My mom has been in the hospital since Christmas Eve so things have been kind of a blur since then. She’s been moved to the Rehab unit and will be getting physical therapy so that’s good. I’m hopeful that she will be back home in a week or so. We’ve been making numerous trips to her house (20 minute drive each way) to take care of her cats, check mail, etc. David has been wonderful through all this. He’s been doing the early morning “cat care” because he’s been on vacation all this time. But starting tomorrow he is back to work and I’ll be taking over the morning shift.
THIS WEEK
I have to stay flexible since I don’t know how things will go with my mom. But I hope to start getting into my new routines for the coming year, spend some time planning, and put my office back in order. I stored all the Christmas gifts in my office as well as wrapping, and doing Christmas cards there. It’s not horrible but it’s messier than I’m comfortable with.
WORK
I plan to write a few blog posts this week to wrap up 2023 and start 2024. The January LWD newsletter will go out tomorrow and I need to schedule social media for the week. I meant to do it over the weekend but didn’t get around to it.
READING
I finished the following:
100 Ways to Be That Girl ~ Fiona Ferris
One Writer’s Beginnings ~ Eudora Welty
A Christmas Kiss ~ Ursula LeCoeur
The Road to Le Papillon ~ Shannon Ables
I also completed an entire year of Bible readings from the Presbyterian Daily Lectionary.
My Goodreads goal for 2023 was 50 books and I read 47. I’m pleased enough with that. I’ve set another goal of 50 for 2024. Are you on Goodreads? Do you have a reading goal for the year? I’d love to hear about it.
Currently reading:
The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady ~ Edith Holden
This was a gift from my daughter and son-in-law for Christmas. I will be reading from it throughout the year.
An Incomplete Education ~ Judy Jones and William Wilson
I’ve had an old edition of this for ages. I’ve read parts of it in the past but decided to read through the entire book this year. If I read 2-3 pages a day I’ll finish it in a year.
Celia’s House ~ D.E. Stevenson
I needed something to read last night after we saw in the New Year (in bed after a quiet night at home – ha!). This was one I had saved on my Kindle so I started it. I think I’ll really enjoy it.
The Girls of Mulberry Lane ~ Rosie Clarke
This is my current audiobook. I have about 3 hours left. With all the trips to my mom’s house I should easily finish it this week.
I told David that we need to set aside at least one evening a week to listen to an hour of Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West, an audiobook we began on our last road trip. We still have 13 hours left!
If you don’t already have Audible, you can get a free trial here. We’ve definitely been enjoying it on long drives.
SELF CARE
My skin gets so dry and itchy in the winter. I just bought a bottle of Eucerin Intensive Repair body lotion last week and it’s some good stuff! It’s really thick and a little bit difficult to rub in but it sure does a good job. I’m trying to get into the habit of using it all over after my evening shower.
HEALTH & FITNESS
David and I are planning to take daily walks to mailbox (it’s quite a distance), use the exercise bike daily and institute an earlier bedtime.
We put the cats to bed in the laundry room at around 9 or 9:15 each night so I am going to go directly upstairs at that point and take my shower. When I’m through I’ll “stomp” on the floor of our bedroom which is over the library. That will be David’s signal to stop watching TikTok videos and come to bed – ha! Seriously, though, we both need more sleep.
FUN ACTIVITIES
We really enjoyed doing our Advent puzzle together each night in December until Christmas. As soon as we put it away I got out another puzzle for us to do. We usually spend 15-30 minutes working on it after the dinner dishes are done each evening.
I’d like to have a movie night sometime this week. I might even go buy real movie popcorn from the theater.
One of my goals this year is to spend more time reading. I’d like to read at least a book a week.
HABIT OF THE MONTH (JANUARY)
I don’t know about you but I’m in the mood to do some more decluttering. January always seems like a good time for this. The challenge is to declutter something every day. It can be anything from a single item to a drawer, closet or other storage area. I suggest making a list of areas to declutter being sure to include some small or easy ones. Then each day pick one according to time available and energy level.
