I attended a community meeting last night to discuss a plan for dealing with homelessness and poverty. I was stunned and impressed by the turnout. There were well over 100 people in attendance. I’m so excited to see people from various organizations and churches working together to tackle a difficult problem. It’s still in the planning stages but we have a good model to follow which has worked well in another community for close to 50 years. I’m thrilled to be involved in something like this and look forward to doing whatever I can to help.
I sometimes feel as though people judge me for not going back to my former career as a R.N. now that my kids are grown but I keep reminding myself that I wouldn’t have as much time for volunteer work if I were working outside the home. I love all the various volunteer activities I participate in and am grateful that David fully supports my decision not to re-enter the workforce. There are so few people these days who actually have sufficient time to devote extensive volunteer work. Since I do, I take that responsibility seriously. Besides, it’s truly rewarding to be able to help others.

Deanna, volunteer work is vital to our communities and probably saves taxpayer money in the long run. As you said, if you worked full time, you would not have the time to serve those in need. The problems would not go away and would often multiply, becoming more of a burden on the government. Do people who question your choice to not return to the work force think it would be better for you to pursue your own financial self interests rather than serve the community? Volunteering is both a sacrifice and a reward. I know those you serve appreciate all you do.

Cherie, thank you so much. I really needed to hear that. 🙂
