My grandmother used to tell how my dad, as a little fellow, would often ask for ‘umpin ‘weet (something sweet). David’s family usually had dessert every night after dinner but that wasn’t the norm in my family. On the other hand, we always had “something sweet” available whenever we might be in the mood.
I’ve not been in the habit of serving desserts regularly but I must admit that my sweet tooth has really been in evidence in recent weeks. I have made this Fresh Banana Cake three times and a spice cake once.
After seeing a picture one of my New Orleans friends posted of his big order of Drake’s Cakes (snack cakes like Hostess) I decided to do likewise. My family thought I had lost it because that is in no way the sort of thing I would ever think to do. But these are “interesting times”, right?

As David and I were finishing the dishes after dinner tonight I asked if he wanted a cup of tea. He said he wanted coffee…”and a piece of banana cake”. Sadly, there is no cake right now. I made one a few days ago but it is gone.
What I’d really like right now are a couple of warm-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies. But it’s late and I’m too tired to make cookies. However, that’s definitely going on my to-do list this weekend. In fact, I just might bake a couple of different types of cookies and maybe a cake that I can freeze in individual portions. Or cupcakes.
So I started looking through my dessert recipes here on the blog. I’m really more of a “food” cook than a dessert maker so it’s no surprise that I don’t have a huge number of sweet recipes posted. Still, I thought it would be fun to put them all in one post and share them with you. After all, I’m sure I’m not the only one craving “something sweet” these days.
Life With Dee Dessert Recipes
Fresh Banana Cake – I swear, this is what is getting us through quarantine. If you haven’t tried this one yet, you are missing out.
Old Fashioned Orange Jello Dessert – A light, refreshing dessert perfect for summer.
Pepsi Cake ~ A 70s Throwback Recipe – I should put buttermilk on my next grocery order so I can make this childhood favorite. I happen to have a lot of miniature marshmallows on hand. I ordered regular marshmallows for s’mores but my Instacart shopper figured miniature ones would do. Kinda hard to roast them so I guess that means I should bake a cake.
Vegan Pumpkin Cookies – I do have all of the necessary ingredients for these. Perhaps this would be a good choice for the second batch of cookies this weekend. With ingredients like oatmeal, whole wheat flour, pumpkin and molasses, we could even consider these health food, right?
Dee’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookies – I haven’t made these in months, in part because I have no self-control where these cookies are concerned. I think I’ll just bake up part of the batch and freeze the rest of the dough.
Iced Pumpkin Cookies – This recipe was shared as a guest post years ago. It looks really good but I’ve not tried the recipe myself.
Ginger Cookies – Another guest post recipe from years ago, it calls for sorghum which I don’t have. I could likely substitute molasses and/or honey.
Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies – Now here’s a cookie recipe that is actually pretty healthy and low in fat. And they are really quite good. They are not an unreasonable choice for breakfast.
Pumpkin Bread – This recipe is from our church cookbook that I helped put together years ago. It makes three loaves and they freeze well. I have definitely indulged in this one for breakfast.
Molasses Cake with Pumpkin Cream Cheese Frosting – This one is from many, many years ago and there is no picture included.
The Best Brownies – EVER! – Another recipe from ages ago with no picture but this is my go-to brownie recipe. Delicious!
Blueberry Sponge Cake – My daughter shared this one with me a long time ago but I’ve not ever tried it. I do, however, have blueberries in the freezer so this might be another option for my planned baking spree this weekend.
The Best Cupcakes Ever – This was another guest post recipe. I have half a recipe of cream cheese frosting left over from the most recent banana cake. I’ll bet it would be delicious on these.
Apple Fritter Bread – What I’d really like is a donut but perhaps this would tide me over until it’s safe to make a donut shop run.
Dark Chocolate Cranberry Scones – Scones to go with my tea? Sounds like a possibility.
Dee’s Chocolate Sheet Cake – The only thing that keeps me from making this one is that it makes a HUGE cake. On the other hand, I could cut it in pieces and freeze them. We’d have delicious cake for days and days.
Welsh Cakes – This final dessert recipe comes from a blogging friend who happens to be an honest-to-goodness Welsh person. I’ve not made this one but it sounds lovely.
Now I just need to decide which of these to make this weekend. Which ones would you choose?
A great batch of recipes there. I’m not used to having dessert every day after dinner either, but it’s nice to have something sweet on hand for when you crave it… Especially during that time in the afternoon that’s ideal for afternoon tea. I mean, you can’t have a proper afternoon tea without something nice to go with your tea, right? 😉
Absolutely! I must admit I have had too many sweets during quarantine, though. I decided to order some very nice dark chocolates and just allow myself one each afternoon with my tea. Except when I bake another banana cake or some chocolate chip cookies – ha!
I think we’ve all had a few more treats than we probably should have during all this. I know I sure have. But never mind.
