Welcome to the fourth week of the new LWD Grocery Haul series in which I share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you find this new series interesting.

LWD GROCERY HAUL
September 2024 ~ Week Four
My mom didn’t need much in the way of groceries this week so I decided to skip a regular grocery pick-up at Pruett’s. I only needed a handful of items and was able to get them at Braum’s, along with the things my mom needed. I also bought a loaf of bread at a local convenience store which, for some reason, has the freshest bread I’ve seen around here.
Local Convenience Store:
- Sara Lee bread (1 lb. 8 oz.) (I can’t find the receipt but I think it was around $3.50)
Braum’s (regional dairy/ice cream store):
- half and half (1 pint) $3.19 (*In looking at the receipt I see that they charged me for 2 pints of half and half instead of one half and half plus one heavy cream. I’m not sure if they are the same price or not.)
- heavy cream (1 pint) $3.19
- bananas (2) $.42 (on sale for $.58 a pound)
- bagels (16.2 oz.) $2.89
- large baking potatoes (3) $4.17 ($1.79 a pound) – more expensive than I usually get but they are also quite large
- ground sirloin – 91% lean (1 lb.) $7.99
- Tostitos tortilla chips (12 ounces) $4.99
- frozen spring vegetables (10 ounces) $2.79 (I normally buy these at Pruett’s but I see they are 60 cents cheaper at Braum’s. Noted!)
Total (minus sales tax): $29.79 (plus the loaf of bread)
It’s nice to have one of these low-spend weeks occasionally!
In full disclosure I should mention that I buy a number of food items from Amazon. I received our monthly Subscribe and Save order today and the food items included:
- Bigelow decaffeinated Earl Grey tea bags (6 boxes of 20 tea bags) $13.74
- Thai Kitchen organic unsweetened coconut milk 16.33 fl. oz. (12 cans) $22.27
- Classico roasted garlic pasta sauce (24 oz.) $2.55
- Campbells New England clam chowder 16.3 oz. (8 cans) $13.45
- Colavita diced tomatoes 13.76 oz. (16 cartons) $27.96
- Quaker Instant Oatmeal (48 packets) $11.20
Total: $91.17 (plus tax)
The items I buy from Amazon are either less expensive than I can buy locally or are unavailable here. Plus, if they are things I use a lot of, it’s nice to have a good stock of them in my pantry.
If you’ve not tried the Colavita brand diced tomatoes, I highly recommend them. They come in a carton instead of a can and they have an excellent flavor and consistency. I use them in a lot of recipes and I can even make a super easy pasta sauce with them by adding a generous amount of Italian seasoning, a pinch of sugar and perhaps a splash of red wine if I happen to have an open bottle.
The coconut milk is WAY cheaper than my regular store. It would cost me $41.88 for 12 cans instead of $22.27. Plus, the Amazon version is organic whereas my store’s is not (same brand).
I should note that the clam chowder is for Chris. He adores that stuff so I try to keep it on hand for him to eat when David and I are out of town. We really appreciate him taking care of things when we are away so this is the least I can do. 🙂
If you are new to buying food items from Amazon Subscribe and Save, I should mention that it’s important to keep an eye on the prices. They can change over time.
Do you have any favorite food items you buy regularly from Amazon?
My planned menu for the week:
I stuck to last week’s menu fairly closely. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday were all as planned.
Wednesday was supposed to be turkey shepherd’s pie but since I had a fair amount of leftover Swiss Steak from Monday, I improvised. I cut up the remaining pieces of steak and added a bag of frozen mixed vegetables along with a couple of cups of chicken broth to thin out the tomato sauce to the proper consistency. I simmered until the veggies were cooked and poured the mixture into a baking dish. I spread the leftover mashed potatoes over the filling, topped with grated cheese and baked until hot and bubbly. It was really good! In fact, I will plan to do that with Swiss Steak leftovers from now on.
I had intended to have leftovers on Saturday but we had eaten them for lunches instead. David suggested Chinese take-out and that sounded good to me. He had had a long and busy day so I drove to town to pick it up. We didn’t eat until around 8 p.m. but it sure tasted good!
For Sunday I had planned to make a Caesar salad with grilled chicken strips on it. However, the guys opted for the Chinese leftovers and since I had eaten a late lunch, I just skipped dinner.

I honestly always forget about food items from Amazon. My husband buys our dog treats, his protein shakes and his office snack items/energy drinks from Amazon but I never think to check there. I guess it’s because we have such variety here in “The City” that most of the time I can find what I want somewhere. Have you had problems with any broken food items in shipping with Amazon? Just curious!

Very rarely has something come damaged but they are very good about replacing those items. I started doing this at the beginning of the pandemic when so many items were nearly impossible to get in the stores. And then it just became convenient. David built some shelves in our huge storage closet near the kitchen so I have room for cases of items. I joke about having my own grocery store at home.

Dee, I love the Happy Belly coffees and the Amazon Basics pizza sauce. I will say though that the Basics pizza sauce can change from time to time, being sourced from different places. One is like a crushed tomato, the other a well-seasoned thick sauce. I like them both so I’m never upset with which one they are sourcing at the moment.
And there are other good deals in food, such as name-brand individual chips packages for 34c an ounce, or name-brand candy bars at 84c for a full-size bar.
I agree that you must keep an eye on prices. I check my upcoming orders each month to see what items I have more than enough of and which are higher than what I might buy locally.
Karla, I have had two items arrive damaged in three years. Both times I was issued an immediate refund and told to throw away the damaged food item.

I bought a can of the pizza sauce on your previous recommendation but haven’t tried it yet. I do occasionally buy the individual bags of chips but haven’t tried the candy bars. I did order Hershey Kisses once and they came melted into a big mess. I should try again this winter.
