ROMANTICIZE THE SEASON:
SPRING
Ah, springtime…my favorite season is here! It makes me so happy so see the grass begin to turn green and hear the return of birdsong. It truly feels like life begins anew in the spring.
Let’s make the most of this lovely season with a list of ideas to romanticize spring.
MAKE A SPRING PLAYLIST
Springtime needs a new playlist. Make your own or feel free to enjoy mine:
CREATE A SPRING PHONE WALLPAPER
Most of us look at our phones multiple times a day. Why not get a little dose of Spring each time? If you don’t know how to create one, here are a couple of links to help:
How to make your own phone wallpaper using Canva
I like to make one each month with a calendar on it. Here is mine for March (and yes, the numbers aren’t perfectly aligned) just to give you an idea. I find it helpful to have a calendar visible for a quick glance without opening my calendar app. If the imperfections don’t bother you, you are welcome to use it.

It’s no secret I love a good quote. And there are some truly lovely ones for spring. Get out your quote journal and add a few new ones for the season.
CREATE A NEW MORNING ROUTINE
As the seasons change a new morning routine just might be in order. One thing I’m trying to incorporate into my mornings is an outdoor walk. Sunshine first thing in the day is supposed be very good for regulating our circadian rhythms.
How Getting Sunlight in the Morning Can Help You Sleep Better
Perhaps you’d like to add something like meditation, journaling or 15 minutes of reading at the beginning of your day. Consider what might get your day off to a good start and arrange your mornings to accommodate these things.
MAKE A SPRING BOOKMARK
Get out your craft supplies and make a special bookmark for a new season.
WATCH SPRING MOVIES
I searched for movies with a springtime vibe and here is a list to get you started:
- Eat Pray Love
- Field of Dreams
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
- Mary Poppins
- Sound of Music
- The Secret Garden
- Easter Parade
- Emma
- A Room With a View

This was harder than finding spring vibe movies. I’m sure there must be others. Any ideas?
TAKE A SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK
The sun is shining and the air is soft. We would do well to take full advantage of this short season. Take a social media break and use that time for leisurely walks, sipping tea on the porch, reading a good book in the backyard, etc.
ENJOY A COZY HOBBY
Make a new spring wreath for your front door, learn to arrange flowers, go birdwatching, etc.

CHANGE TO SPRING SCENTS FOR HOME AND SELF
The sweet scent of springtime…
If you use scented products, consider changing them with the seasons. For me, nothing is more evocative of spring than the scent of lilacs. It always brings back memories of my grandmother bringing me the first blooms each spring. I really enjoy lilac scented candles this time of year.
These lilac scented products from Mrs. Meyer’s makes my kitchen smell heavenly:
Mrs. Meyer’s Lilac Kitchen Set
I like Caswell-Massey lilac scented soap but it’s gotten rather pricey. Lavender is another good option for a spring scent, though.
Consider changing up your perfume, room spray, scented lotion, essential oils for your diffuser, etc. Some scents to consider for spring in addition to lilac and lavender are lemon, peony, orange blossom or jasmine.
If you need some essential oils, check out this deal at Plant Therapy. It’s good until April 1, 2024:
TAKE A DRIVE TO SEE WILDFLOWERS
I love a nice, leisurely drive…especially when the wildflowers are blooming. As soon as the wildflowers are in bloom in your area, take a hour or two for a drive. Roll down your windows, play some music and enjoy the beauty of springtime. If there are safe places to do so, pull over and take some photos.
SPRING CLEANING
Spring cleaning…romantic? If you approach it with the right mindset, perhaps. Don’t think of it as drudgery but as a means of clearing away the clutter and grime allowing you to enjoy a clean and cheerful home.
Put on a pretty apron and try to do at least one task a day. Even 15 minutes can make a difference.

PEDICURE

SPRINGTIME DECORATING
Some of the things that made our homes feel warm and cozy during the winter can start to look like clutter in the springtime.
- Consider putting away some of the knick knacks until it begins to get cold again.
- Wash and store extra throw blankets.
- Exchange brass and copper decorative items for crystal and silver.
- Switch out throw pillows or better yet, purchase seasonal pillow covers so you only need one set of actual pillows.
- Add a pretty new houseplant.
- New tea towels for the kitchen or a new shower curtain are inexpensive ways to brighten up your home.
Over the years I’ve collected a number of household decor items to suit the seasons. I switch them out at the beginning of each season and my home feels renewed without any extra expense. If you haven’t seen something for several months it feels new and fresh.
FLY A KITE
I haven’t flown a kite in decades but I think it may be time to do so. We have plenty of windy days here in Oklahoma and I think it would be a fun thing to do sometime when we are babysitting Charlotte.
SPRUCE UP YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE(S)
Porches, patios, balconies and other outdoor spaces can get rather grimy over the winter. Give yours a good scrub first and then make them pretty and comfortable for the warm weather.
- potted and hanging plants
- wind chimes
- freshly washed (or new) chair cushions
- candles
- incense
PRESS SPRING FLOWERS
This is something I’ve long thought would be a fun little springtime hobby. Will this be the year I finally do it?

MEET UP WITH FRIENDS FOR BRUNCH
This is something I’m looking forward to. We have a place in our little town that serves Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on their outdoor patio. Can’t wait to enjoy a tasty brunch entree and mimosa with friends!
CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
Earth Day is April 22nd. There are lots of fun ways to celebrate.

GO ON A NATURE HIKE
After months indoors it’s good to get outdoors. Look for a nearby location to go on a nature hike. Not only will you get some exercise and fresh air, but you can enjoy all the lovely signs of spring.
CHOOSE A TEA FOR SPRING
If, like me, you are a tea drinker consider choosing a new tea to enjoy this season. I’m going to try this strawberry tea:
BUY OR CHOOSE A MUG OR TEACUP FOR THE SEASON
Now that we’ve chosen a tea, we need a pretty new mug, right? I love this one with the wildflowers and butterflies. And since it comes as a set of two, you can share a mug of strawberry tea with someone else.
CREATE A SPRING READING LIST
Here are some perfect spring reads:
- All Creatures Great and Small ~ James Herriot
- Anne of Green Gables ~ L.M. Montgomery
- The Secret Garden ~ Frances Hodgson Burnett
- The Enchanted April ~ Elizabeth von Arnim
- The Wind in the Willows ~ Kenneth Grahame
- Spring Fever ~ Mary Kay Andrews
- The Midnight Library ~ Matt Haig
- Heidi ~ Johanna Spyri
I haven’t read this one yet but it’s on my list:
- Old Herbaceous: A Novel of the Garden ~ Reginald Arkell
VISIT A FARMERS MARKET
The best way to enjoy the season’s bounty is to visit your local farmers market. I love to pick out the freshest produce and then create my weekly menu around those treasures. Romanticize a trip to the market by bringing along a pretty straw tote to put your purchases in.
DO SOME BIRD WATCHING
Bird watching is a great spring activity. Put the Merlin app on your phone (it’s free!), grab a pair of binoculars and start learning to identify the birds in your area.
If you need a pair of inexpensive binoculars, Amazon has these for only $25.19 (as of March 24, 2024). Be sure to check the coupon box for 30% off.
VISIT BABY CHICKS AT YOUR LOCAL FARM STORE
Tiny, fuzzy little baby chicks just make me smile. I haven’t decided if I’m going to have chickens again but there is no reason not to go look at them, right?
PLANT A GARDEN
I’m so ready to get out in the yard and start planting things! We need to plant shrubs in the new planter David made across the front of our house. My various pots need to be filled with annuals. There are tomatoes to plant. I’m going to experiment with the best location for a rose garden and I’d love a little herb garden.
Whether you plant a huge vegetable garden to provide your family with a year’s worth of produce or simply nurture a single tomato plant so you can enjoy perfect BLTs this summer, consider planting something this season.

MAKE A STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
When strawberries are at their peak, make homemade shortcake to showcase their delicious flavor.
BUY A NEW EASTER DRESS
This is the one I just bought and it’s currently on sale 25% off:
GO FOR A WALK
Lace up your shoes and go for a walk. Daily walks are one of my springtime goals. I found this YouTube video to be inspiring:
Note: If you have spring allergies consider wearing a good mask while walking outdoors when pollen levels are high. One of the things we’ve learned during the pandemic is the value of a mask for allergies. David wears one when mowing. We both do when using the blower and (when I remember) I wear one when doing heavy dusting indoors. It really does help!
BUY A PAIR OF BRIGHTLY COLORED RAIN BOOTS
Spring can be a rainy season for some areas. But don’t let that keep you indoors. With a good pair of waterproof boots the puddles won’t be a deterrent.
Wouldn’t these be cute with the teal umbrella below?
BUY A COLORFUL UMBRELLA
Why not celebrate spring with a pretty new umbrella?
Or go for an inexpensive compact umbrella:

BLOW BUBBLES
Bubbles aren’t just for children. Pick up a bottle or two at your local dollar store and spend some happy time on your porch blowing bubbles. Such a simple pleasure!
GO FISHING
My husband has taken up fly fishing and I’ve even tried it once so far (ask him who caught the most fish). There’s definitely a lot to learning how to fly fish but even just regular fishing is a fun thing to do when the weather begins to turn warm.
VISIT AN ARBORETUM OR PUBLIC GARDEN
When spring is in full swing, consider visiting an arboretum or public garden.
VISIT A FARM
Is there anything sweeter than new farm babies? I have a local friend with a small farm that I’m dying to visit. I want to see the baby chicks and calves. I think I’ll take my little granddaughter to visit. I’m sure she will love it!
