IN MY HOME:
REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
Monday…
My regular grocery pickup fell through due to a problem with the store’s online ordering system. Instead, I picked up what Mom and I needed at Braum’s and took her things to her, as well as food I had cooked for her.
I wrote the This Week post and did the usual daily housework.
For dinner I made a really tasty beef and vegetable soup with the leftover pot roast and made homemade drop dumplings to add to it.
Tuesday…
I had a doctor appointment at 9:15 a.m. I needed to get blood work done first so I went around 8 a.m. I brought a book with me and sat outside reading between lab work and doctor appointment. We’ve been having such lovely, warm weather. I was able to get my flu shot while I was there. David and I try to stay on the same schedule so he went to the pharmacy and got his later that afternoon.
I wrote the weekly Grocery Haul post, watered houseplants, did daily housework and made tacos for dinner.
Wednesday…
Early this morning I happened to read that the initial batch of Novavax Covid vaccines expired October 31st and it was unclear if there would be more. We’ve done either Pfizer or Moderna up to this point but for a couple of reasons I wanted to get Novavax this time.
I looked up where it was available and our local Walgreens showed to have it. I called to make sure but it’s nearly impossible to talk to a real person in the local store. However, the corporate representative looked it up and assured me they had it. I printed the forms and scheduled our appointments. We filled out the lengthy forms and drove to town in order to be there well before the 15 minutes ahead of schedule as recommended. We waited several minutes in line only to be told that they don’t have Novavax and hadn’t had any for about a week. I was rather annoyed.
David tried to call the Walmart pharmacy but then decided to just drive over there and ask in person. I waited in the truck while he went in. He then texted to tell me that they did. We actually got the last two doses! That means we got the last two in our entire town. It was a bit of an ordeal overall but at least it’s done. Neither of us had any reaction other than a very slightly sore area right around the injection site so that was good.
Since it was lunchtime we picked up burgers at Whip Dip, the local burger place we like. We deserved it!
For dinner I made Sweet and Spicy Meatballs in the slow cooker, homemade mashed potatoes, and veggies.
Thursday…
We went trick-or-treating with little Charlotte and had such a great time! The weather was perfect and the neighborhood where we go really goes all out with decorating. We saw lots of people we know and got to catch up a bit with several friends which was fun.
Afterwards, David and I went to Pruett’s to pick up some other things Mom needed that I hadn’t been able to get at Braum’s. David went in with me and it was like taking a kid to the store. He added a couple of bags of candy, some cookies, and cereal to the cart. We hadn’t had dinner yet and that’s always a bad time to shop.
We took Mom her groceries and then hurried home for me to cook dinner. I made Hawaiian Ham Sandwiches which I served along with coleslaw I’d made earlier in the day. It was about 9 p.m. when we finally ate!
Friday…
David and I were both rather tired this day. David said he could hardly wait for 9 p.m. I asked if he was planning to go to bed that early and he said no, he figured that’s when his second wind would kick in. We both tend to do that. We’ll be tired all afternoon and early evening then about the time we should start thinking about going to bed (if we were smart), we get a second wind and end up staying up late.
Saturday…
Chris picked up lunch from a new Mexican restaurant in town for our lunch. It was really good! David worked on the bathroom remodeling project. I did a little housework, finished the November Art Appreciation post and spent some time trying to catch up on email.
We were pretty full from our Mexican food lunch so I cooked some oatmeal for David and myself. David had a bagel with his and I had raisin toast. Chris ate leftovers.
Sunday…
I scheduled social media, planned our weekly menu, blew off porch and front walkway, windexed the front storm door, dusted and vacuumed the entry hall and outlined this post.
I had to take something to Mom and I also brought three containers of the leftover Sweet and Spicy Meatballs over mashed potatoes which I had frozen for her. It rained pretty hard part of the way to her house and we had some severe weather coming in so I hurried back home.
For dinner we heated up leftover chicken and veggies from Friday night. I had two potatoes left which I baked for Chris and David. I added a salad to my chicken and veggies.
David and I watched an episode of The Gilded Age when we went to bed. Such a good show! (It’s streaming on HBO Max, if you happen to have that. Or you can buy it by the season on Amazon Prime.)
THIS WEEK
Monday…
We’ve had some severe weather today, including some rather ominous rotation around our house. But it was weak and only lasted a couple of minutes.
David has a firefighter meeting at 6 p.m. I think I’m going to cook dinner early so we can eat before the meeting. Otherwise it ends up being so late. Plus, I need to go to the grocery store tonight. The store where I normally get our groceries is still having an issue with online ordering so I’m going to have to shop myself. I figure if I go late evening there won’t be as many people there. At least, I hope that’s the case!
Tuesday…
David and I plan to go vote at about 10 a.m. We figure that will avoid the folks voting on their way to work and before the lunchtime crowd.
I then have a Zoom call in the afternoon.
Wednesday…
I have another Zoom call this day. As of right now, the weather looks to be really nice. Lisa and I have been talking about getting together that afternoon and enjoying Starbucks coffees on her patio. Hopefully that will work out!
Thursday…
My mom has a pedicure appointment at 2 p.m. which I’ll be taking her to. Chris and I will likely watch a movie together.
Friday…
I’m going to try to get back into something I used to do called “French Friday”. I would try to add a bit of a French flair to my day, as well as watching a French film. I am subscribed to the streaming service France Channel but haven’t been taking advantage of it. If I don’t start using it I need to cancel the subscription when it comes up for renewal.
Saturday…
David will be working on the bathroom remodel and I plan to clean house.
Sunday…
My to-do list includes:
- schedule social media
- plan weekly menu
- order groceries
- plan week ahead
- read
- watch an episode of “The Gilded Age” with David
READING
Currently reading…
Carnegie’s Maid: A Novel by Marie Benedict
I’m at least 2/3 of the way through this one and am really enjoying it.
Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith
I have 2 1/2 hours left on this audiobook. I’ve read this several times over the years but this is the first time I’ve listened to the audiobook.
This book was made into a movie in 1965 starring Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux. I can’t find it streaming anywhere at this time, nor can I find it for sale. I think I have it on DVD…I should look. As I recall, I didn’t like the movie as well as the book, but isn’t that usually the case?
Other books ongoing…
The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady ~ Edith Holden
An Incomplete Education ~ Judy Jones and William Wilson
On our recent trip to South Texas, David and I listened to an audiobook on Audible:
Around the World in 80 Trains: A 45,000 Mile Adventure by Monisha Rajesh
If you don’t already have Audible, you can get a free trial here. We’ve definitely been enjoying it on long drives.
SELF CARE
I tend to have Seasonal Affective Disorder and now that the time changed, we’ll have a lot less light each day. I need to start using my light box each day. The one I have is no longer available on Amazon but here is a similar one with good ratings in case you are looking for one:
HEALTH & FITNESS
Short walks after meals have been shown to be even more advantageous than one longer walk per day. I’m going to try to get in the habit. I like to walk outdoors when the weather is nice but I also have a walking pad in my office when it’s not.
FUN ACTIVITIES
“French Friday”, movie night with Chris, coloring, reading and hopefully coffee with Lisa.

The Grilled Ham Sandwich sounded so good when I read your recipe for that! I was just saying in this week’s Journal on my blog that I had a mid-1950’s recipe from a magazine for a Pineapple Pie that had a cheddar crust. It was so good! But then I like pineapple with cheese. I even like pineapple on a BBQ chicken pizza or a ham and sausage pizza! I just like pineapple, lol.
I do, too. I am definitely a “pineapple on pizza” fan. My favorite pie is my grandmother’s pineapple cream pie which I have here on the blog.
