Welcome to the second week of December’s LWD Grocery Haul series in which I share our weekly grocery purchases, including prices. I’m always curious to see what others purchase and what food prices are in different countries or regions. I hope you are finding this series interesting and helpful.

LWD GROCERY HAUL
December 2024 ~ Week Two
My regular shopper, Reba, was back this week and I was happy to see her. The first thing she asked is whether her replacement last week wore a mask when bringing out my groceries. He had not. She was annoyed by that as she said those instructions are is the top of the order and first thing he should have seen. I thought that was so sweet of her and just one reason I have truly come to appreciate her over the past few years.
It also turns out we were both getting our roofs replaced this week. She’s been through a long hassle over home repairs this past year but it looks like it’s finally getting sorted out. It’s funny how people can become important to you during these small interactions over time.

I didn’t need a whole lot this week but I did want to take advantage of some sales. Anyone else notice that you tend to run out of expensive condiments at the same time? It’s been ages since I last bought soy sauce and I was surprised at the cost. Fortunately Liquid Smoke is cheap, especially in light of how long it takes me to go through a bottle. I’m not entirely certain I’ve bought it more than about three times in my whole marriage – ha! I do like a few drops in beans if I’m not adding meat. It gives vegan recipes like my Vegan Brazilian Black Beans a little extra flavor.
Our weekly menu…
I stuck to this menu Monday and Tuesday but realized I forgot to buy the fresh stir fry veggies for Wednesday’s planned meal. Oops! I’ll make Friday’s meal tonight – sort of. Instead of lasagna I’ll make a baked pasta dish using the frozen tortellini I bought this week. It will be easier than lasagna. I’ll make a big enough pan that we can have the leftovers Friday night.
I’m still planning to make Split Pea Soup on Thursday. I packaged up leftover ham from Thanksgiving in several small packages and I’ll use one in the soup.

Chicken Enchilada Soup ~ A Slow Cooker Recipe
This is such an easy and really tasty recipe. I brought some to my mom last night and she loved it. We had enough leftover for David and I to each have a small bowl of it today with our sandwiches for lunch. I think next time I make it I’ll double the recipe so we can have leftovers for a few lunches. I may try freezing some, as well.

What service do you use that lets you get the same assigned personal shopper? I’m curious! Also, I think I’ve bought ONE bottle of liquid smoke in 30 years. LOL And boy be careful with that stuff! Can’t wait to try your chicken enchilada soup recipe! Yum!

I get my groceries from Pruett’s. They only offer online shopping in Ada, Broken Bow and Durant, though. I sure hope they never drop this service! I do sometimes get groceries from Aldi via Instacart but you never know who you’ll get as a shopper. My daughter gets most of hers that way, though, and she’s become well-acquainted with one of their shoppers. It’s easier in a small town because it’s a more limited pool of shoppers.
You’re absolutely right about Liquid Smoke – a couple of drops is usually plenty! Hope you enjoy the soup recipe. 🙂

Oh good to know! I know Pruett’s owns several stores here in OKC (Uptown Grocery) but I’m sure the process is different up here.
Terri says
Oh goodness, the last bottle of liquid smoke I bought had to have been about 30 years ago and I’d have it yet, but I dropped it and spilled half of it! Oh MY that stuff is excellent to give a depth of flavor but don’t spill it! It smells something awful, lol.
I use it in my beans, bean soups, and when cooking my collards. I’m not keen on smoked meat really and prefer liquid smoke. It’s also incredibly good in a roast beef gravy.
I’ve made the tortellini lasagna dish with ravioli. I like it a lot.
Deanna Piercy says
Oh, my! I’ll bet your house smelled like the inside of a smoker for days!
I had frozen ravioli on my grocery list but the store was out and my shopper asked if tortellini would be okay. It worked just fine taste-wise but because of the shape I couldn’t layer it like lasagna. I ordered (and received!) ravioli this week and that’s my current plan for an easy Christmas Day lunch. I will layer it with the usual ricotta and egg mixture like lasagna.
